October Autogragh Pick Up Thread
2 fresh Tony Oliva autographs. This is the first time I have ever stood in line to get an autograph. Tony was very pleasant and instantly recognized the SGA card and asked how I got it and then asked about the Custom Rookie refractor. Being my first time and the fact that I had spent way more time talking to him than everybody else I skipped the photo with him. Now I wish I would have taken the extra 30 seconds for the photo.

I got this at the end of last month, but just got it into my display. For a WWII collector, John Andre is quite the story. He was actually stationed in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese started bombing. He was injured and received a Purple Heart! Off the top of my head, I don't know of any other MLB players who were in PH that day, let alone got injured.

got this autograph from a live auction on here for 6 bucks from mintacular, I figured if it wasn't real then it'd only be 6 bucks ( it matches some of the later certs I've seen from Stan). it was on a little piece of what looked like vanilla folder. so I decided to make a card for it.
The card I made is 5x4 inches and the auto is in a flimsy top loader cut to size. I then colorized the photo from 1941 and stuck it in a 1941 play ball design, Made the back and added details of where I got it from so I wouldn't forget. the card is rigid and feels like a card, just larger. this is my second Musial autograph, the other being on a ball I got ttm years ago from Mr. Musial. it fits perfectly in a 5x7 top loader Edit* i just noticed the typo on the back lol oh well Last edited by TAVG; 10-05-2015 at 01:43 PM. |

Excited to add this card to my 1957 set. Solly Drake is a very difficult autograph to attain. After he got done playing baseball he became a pastor in LA and basically left the game behind him. Doesn’t respond to autograph requests in the mail and has never done a public or private signing.

A couple more that arrived the past two days. A signed RC I have been wanting to add, and as close to a playing day's issue as I'll get for a Hall of Famer.

.
Like earlywynnfan, I also received this item last month. Just haven't had time to post it until now. Nothing earth shattering, and the pencil signatures are a tad on the light side. But pleased none the less. Bought it mainly for the McNaughton signature, but all of the former Detroit Tigers are a nice bonus. |

Curiosity got the best of me and I took a peek under this Zack Wheat postcard that was glued into a scrapbook I picked up over the weekend and it's signed "Buck Wheat". Anyone seen another instance of Wheat signing with his nickname?

Yeah...I probably should have taken a bit more time, but whatever glue was used I'm just glad it was only two small spots because it's like cement.

Vandy and Basketball HOF'er Benny Borgmann
I just picked up this sweet circa 1938 vintage signed photo of Johnny Vander Meer and Basketball HOF'er Benny Borgmann. Vandy and Borgmann both hailed from the same area in NJ and apparently knew each other quite well.
This photo originated from the personal estate of Benny Borgmann who starred in professional basketball and also played for many years as a baseball middle infielder and manager in the minor leagues. Borgmann was also a pro basketball player and original Celtic, leading the American Basketball League in scoring 4 times (1926-1927, 1928-1929, 1929-1930, 1930-1931). He was elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1961 Borgmann passed away in November, 1978. Last edited by Scott Garner; 10-08-2015 at 04:30 AM. |

Dan, here are a few letters I have of Zach Wheat where he signed Buck. They were sent to his girlfriend Daisy Forsman who he married. In the last letter he talks about the Brooklyn Club playing an exhibition game in Newark N J. He hurt his ankle that spring and didn't play.

The Al Burch has something written on it, but doesn't look like he signed it with his name. The anonymous player has nothing on the back of the card that I can tell.

A few recent pickups:
Vincent Richards - Was the most successful tennis player in a single Olympics with two gold medals and one silver medal in 1924. Unless mixed doubles is reintroduced this record will not be broken (Sorry Williams sisters). He also won 4 US National championships, one Wimbledon and one French Open all in doubles. Jim Bausch - 1932 gold medal in the decathlon. Philip Noel-Baker - the only person to win an Olympic medal (1920 1500m silver) and a Nobel Prize (1959 Peace). Paavo Nurmi - one of the greatest long distance runners of all time. He won 9 gold medals and 3 silver medals mostly in the 5,000 m 10,000 m and cross country. This came with a group of identified U.S. track athletes listed as an unknown signature. A difficult signature to recognize if you have never seen it. Signed in 1940 in New York.

Mike Burke signature
My latest pickup; a Mike Burke letter and signature. He ran the Yankees in the CBS years, and I think he was briefly a minority owner with Steinbrenner. He was also a counter-insurgent spy fighting the Nazis on D-Day in WWII, hung out regularly with Ernest Hemingway, and ran the Ringling Brothers Circus.
I think he is a pretty tough signature. Also, not particularly popular among Yankees fans, I think. |

1. Your use of currency as a TTM medium is interesting. Any particular reason why?
2. I couldn't tell you based on the signature, but there is speculation that Shaq's father and other family members have been ghost signing his TTM mail for the past couple of years. I do know most of the Shaq submissions in the past few bulk subs I have been a part of were labeled questionable. You never know though..

I choose the currency because it is inexpensive and different. there are so many diff types and I just think it looks cool. I would be open to listening to others who have submitted Shaq TTM's and came back questionable.

Charles "Cy" Rigler-
Purchased this prior to the HOF finalist list coming out as a rider, probably the next umpire to be elected to the HOF. Credited for being the first umpire to use hand signals and yelling strike calls, not to mention umpiring the first All Star Game and 10 World Series. Purchased from a fellow board member. |
