Default NY Highlanders scarce 1904, plus more

I posted the offering below last month, sold it quickly, but now have obtained a second edition of same. Its condition is not quite so terrific, but still very good. I'll leave the write-up below as it is the same type of item but please note--the photos below are of the earlier piece. If you are at all interested I will send you scans of the current one.

This is a very unusual piece and admittedly hard to price, so bear with me.

A well-known photographer named Burr McIntosh started his own loosely-bound magazine in 1903 which featured a wild variety of photos/plates printed on thicker paper, from Broadway actors to famous historic or nature scenes, plus sports--college football, horse racing, and yes, baseball. As chronicled at net54 and Old Cardboard (easily found via Google search), the gorgeous baseball team photos included college squads (such Princeton, Lafayette, Yale etc.) and just a handful of major league teams--Boston, NY Giants, and those forerunners of the Yankees, the Highlanders--featuring in that photo HOFers Keeler, Chesbro and Griffith.

The covers of the issues were beautiful, often seasonal, illustrations on stiff cardboard, slightly larger than the pages inside. The package was held together via string slipped through three tiny holes and tied in a knot. This encouraged people to remove the pages and frame them, which indeed some of them deserve.

So what we have here for you to make an offer on is an entire Burr McIntosh issue from November 1904 with a Yale student or cheerleader on the cover. Inside this issue is that Highlanders image in great shape. Indeed almost all the pages are in great shape, including a few of the famous Manassas Civil War battle (see colorized image), a view of the NYC Battery, a portrait of John Philip Souza, an editorial and a few pages of vintage ads, and so on. The cover's spine is partly frayed, as you'll see, and a name scribbled on the top right, but it's still striking.

But the main point is that the Highlanders portrait is wonderful and may be especially valuable because 1) it retains its original 3 tiny punch holes, unlike most that exist 2) is in terrific shape with no creasing and good corners (ditto) 3) is a very cool shot with a dark backdrop of trees in a park 4) is part of a complete magazine, unlike ones that are loose 5) and so can be kept inside the magazine or removed and framed 6) may be historic--some claim (true or not) that is is FIRST EVER TEAM PHOTO of NY's American League team. Any fraying you see at top of photo of the team is from the cover, not this image.

What that adds up you can decide if you make an offer. Prices paid for the very few that have surfaced are all over the map, partly due to condition or trimming (holes trimmed off) and other factors. SCP sold just the single image of the Highlanders for over 800 bucks in 2011 if that means anything (and that image had small tears). This is a better package than that with the full magazine etc.--but what this is "worth" I can only let the buyer establish! Thanks for reading.
