Hey guys I wanted to get some opinions and input on how to go about selling partial sets. So I have a 1934 Goudey set I've been working on now for a few years and I may end up parting ways with it to put the money into the house. Looking to redo a kitchen so you who have owned or own a house know how expensive that can get haha. I'm just looking at options and maybe parting ways with some cards I can buy back later on may be the best way to go bout it. Then I'm not having to dip so much into savings.
Anyway, The set is ranked 34 on PSA registry with a 4.968 weighted GPA. I've put a reasonable amount of money into it and i want to try to get most of my money back from the investment. So I am asking you what's the best way to go about? 1.break it up and sell them all individually 2.sell as a partial set The second part of this is sell it on my own or go through a auction house? I think an auction house is a bit better reaches more people but I also lose money in the process with all the fees. In summary I just want your opinion on basically what would you do. Thanks for all input and opinions. Jesse

many AH's do not charge fees to sellers anymore if the consignment is substantial enough.
selling individually is usually best way to optimize profits. |

Jesse - I have seen the love you have for the '34s and have a two-word solution for you:
EAT OUT!

Raymond- haha that's funny. I do love my 34's and not sure if I will part with them yet or at all but I want to look at every option I can before starting this project.
Ullmandds- thanks for the words.

If you have the time individually. You will likely see much more in return.

Selling them individually, I am looking at selling my complete 34G set and plan on breaking it up.
Although AHs don't charge consignors anymore, you will only get the hammer price and most bidders figure that into their bidding. I always felt if I had the time to avoid a "fire sale" that me doing it individually was best. |

The first thing I would do is determine what price you would like to realize for each card. After doing this I would list a few here on the BST at prices you are comfortable with. I would also place in the ad that you have additional 34G for sale and to contact you for info on what you have available. I would counsel against selling in bulk in one or two auctions even if the cards are listed individually. The reason I say this is because many set builders and collectors are on budgets. You may be offering 50 cards that are all or mostly needs or upgrades but the potential buyers may only be able to purchase 3-4 of them at the time. In a situation like this I fear what would most likely happen is your best items get picked off for good prices and many other cards get lost in the shuffle and only achieve weak to moderate returns. Another thought would be to list many on your own but possibly send the stars and low pop cards to an auction house. Regardless, unless pressed for immediate funds I would recommend not selling in one group.
Just my two cents, good luck with whatever you decide and with the house. Last edited by botport; 03-08-2015 at 11:52 AM. |

I would sell them individually. A few years ago a sent a partial set of 220 T206's and a partial set of 100 T205's to an auction house and I was very disappointed with the prices.
Of course, I put the partial sets together one card at a time, and I probably spent more than I should have on some of the cards. Rick

Depends how you would sell them individually. On Net54 you won't have fees unless your PayPal (even via Gift) is over $20K and 200 transactions, then you'll be taxed. But you won't have the number of bidders and buyers necessarily interested.
eBay will get you maximum exposure, but plan on giving up at least 10% to eBay and 5% to PayPal, and doing all the work yourself. An Auction House (yes, I work for one) will be around the same 15% or less but you don't do any of the work, and get exposure to a lot of bidders. There is no easy answer, in other words. You do get more selling one at a time if you find buyers for each, or else stars on their own and group up commons. Good luck!

I'm with Raymond. Don't sell out Jesse! We all have ups and downs in our collecting interest. You will be glad later when this urge to sell wears off. |

True we all have ups and downs and I'm not planning on selling. At least not yet. I'm just looking at options. And weighing them out. I wanted to see how people would go about selling them. I'm still figuring out multiple options.
