HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT SHOELESS JOE JACKSON & BLACK SOX SCORECARD AUTOGRAPHED BY TRIS SPEAKER Scored in pencil and signed boldly by Tris Speaker. For a September 24th , 1920 game played at Dunn Field between the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians. Locked in a bitter struggle for the pennant on this day pitcher Walter Mails pitched a 3 hit shutout against the Chicago White Sox with Joe Jackson getting one of those hits. It would be one of his last. Rumors had been rampant that the White Sox had been forbidden by managers of a gambling syndicate who had certain players in their power and who had backed Cleveland heavily to not take over 1st place. At the start of this game the Sox were within 1/2 game of the pennant and the gamblers stood to loose large sums of money with only a week left in the season. The White Sox threw the game but coincidentally on this very day one of the gamblers informs the Grand jury of the 1919 World Series Fix as well as the plans to fix the 1920 season, So it was too late. Baseball had had enough , Joe Jackson and the rest of the Black Sox (Chick Gandil had retired after the 1919 season) played their last game on September 27th only three days later and on the 28th testified before the Grand Jury. None would play again. Cleveland would go on to win the pennant and their first World Championship with Hall of Famer Tris Speaker who has signed this scorecard as player/manager. Interesting too in that one month prior Cleveland shortstop Ray Chapman had been killed by a pitched ball. Program measures 8 3/4 x 11 when opened but has seperated at the spine and could be professionally restored otherwise in surprisingly good condition considering the four page scorecard is nearly 100 years old . Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, Swede Risberg & Happy Felsch all started that day and are printed on the rosters along with Lefty Williams and Fred McMullen. Comes with copies of newspaper articles detailing the day's game and aftermath as well as rumors of the fix. Unique and historic artifact that documents an infamous day in baseball history. $2,500.00
