Any thoughts on this listing? I was thinking about picking it up for PSA grading but a little hesitant about potential trimming. If this is the right place to ask, please LMK.

Why would you pay that much to get a PSA 1?
I don't get it. |

Why would you assume it would grade as a PSA 1? Still fairly new to this, and haven't bought many raw cards for grading. Are you seeing something in this that would make it a PSA 1 or Authentic?

Seems like it could be trimmed along the top, although it may measure correctly. Top edge looks uneven and with cut remnants on back, and although the latter are not always determinative, I don't recall seeing that with Hires. There also seems to be a slight paper pull/tear on the back near the last line of text.
I started to collect these a long time ago and gave up because I wasn't thrilled with the player selection (several AL teams not represented), but I thought the design was among the coolest. I remember that it was one of the toughest sets for me to get a handle on trimming, because the cards were far from uniform in size. It was just as bad or worse when you collected the cards with tabs attached--those puppies always seemed to be cut just slightly different from one to the next.

My experiences echo Todd's- lots of variation of sizes on this issue. Add to that that the removal of the tab often lead to small wrinkles that take the grade down considerably.
As a side note of trivia, '58 Hires was one of the designs considered for the '56 Bowman set before Bowman settled with Topps and closed up. ![]() |
