The Roaring Twenties?

The 1920's were notorious for consumer consumption...namely liquor. Very light on Baseball Card production however. The decade ended with the huge crash...60 years before the first super-premium (hologramed) cards were produced.

Certainly, there were a few nice looking 1920's cards. Whatcha got???

I had always totally felt this way too, but since joining the board and being exposed to more and more of the various B/W caramel issues (many posted on main forum, and many offered on BST like Brian Van Horn's regular listings), many of the sets have grown on me including E120, E121, E122, E220, as well as some of the exhibits. Still can't bring myself to like strips through.

Ian - For the most part BW photo cards (besides OJ) don't do anything for me. Does anyone know why cards had such a dramatic change in appearance during that decade?

I felt exactly the same until I got my first couple. I was roped in by early Ruth's/Gehrigs and fallen in love with them since. Give it time, you may get sucked in like me.

I'll defer to other board experts as to why there was not much color in these 20's sets, but will venture to guess it may relate the development of cameras and their ability to capture action shots more clearly than in the past (as compared with long held/posed faux action shots in OJ era). Seems to me this style of B/W set, with action shots started in the teens (T202, E135, etc) and carried into the '20s. Maybe these were considered more "modern" than the early T and E style artwork.

You have almost all of them...certainly lots of HOFrs I cannot get a hold of.

Thanks, all 3 of those raw ones and the Hornsby came from the BST. In addition to Ruth, HOFers like Sisler, Alexander, Heilmann also sucked me into the '20s sets because all played in a window that kept them out of many of the other huge sets that came before and after like T206 and Goudey.

There's some sweet ones on BST now.. many of which are pretty uncommon, but affordable

It's funny, because when I first started getting into vintage and pre-war collecting, I really didn't have any interest in the black and white cards. I didn't dislike them, mind you, but I felt somewhat indifferent. But then I looked at Jeff's post card collection (jb217676), and just fell in love with black & white. Next, I saw Adam's collection of Exhibit cards, and I was hooked. There's a real beauty and elegance in the simplicity of black and white photography. Now I see things like the Sporting News M101-2 supplements, and I really want to incorporate them into my collection. And once I begin collecting again in earnest, which will happen soon, there will certainly be a lot more diversity in my collection.

My 2 early Yankees from before I discovered EBAY- purchased from Teletrade via phone auctions...what a ripoff that was...both seller & buyer paid fees.

Raymond, thanks for giving me the opportunity to once again show some of my favorite Sam Rice cards from the 1920's.

I realize that I'm in the minority, but I much prefer the real-photo b & w cards of the 1920's to the colorful artwork cards of the 1910's.

Wow, there's some really awesome cards posted in this thread! I really like the B&W cards from the '20's. "Old School (pre-digital)" Photography is a hobby of mine. I actually minored in it in college and have spent a lot of time in a Darkroom. Because of that, I picked a set from that era to concentrate on - the E121-80 set. I'm up to around 30 or so. I also try to collect pittsburgh related types from that era as well. Here's a couple:

Imo, one of the best looking cards ever came from the 20's the e121-120 Ruth Montage...

I love black and white sets and the 1920's is one of my favorite times periods for cards. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....

I agree most strip cards are very ugly, but there are some here and there from certain sets that are much better looking than others. I've always liked this Ruth....

Brian, you have a fabulous collection of W504s, especially of the Wash. Senators cards which are super scarce! To me, these are "to die for" cards, ever since I started collecting cards of all players on the 1924 Senators team a few years ago. My 2011 edition of the Standard Catalog of Vintage BB Cards shows that about half of the Senators checklist is still unknown - I don't know if the more recent editions have changed this. FYI, I know of another Board member who has card #160 of WaJo (not checklisted in 2011), but I don't think there is a snowball's chance of enticing him to part with it.

... Fresco Thompson has beautiful penmanship....it's fountain pen and probably of that period....that doesn't really matter though ; it's just neat that it's signed ; he became a Dodger in the thirties and stayed with them in their organization forever it seems .
