Default W514 Ruth question

I have an opportunity to possible pick up a W514 Ruth and was just curious how people view this particular card, and strip cards in general for that matter? The one I'm considering has been assigned a numeric grade of greater than 1 if that makes any difference. Thanks for any and all input.

I like strip cards. They are an affordable way to buy cards of great players. My Ruth is a w516. However I think assigning numerical grades is ridiculous because they are all hand cut.

The w514 is one of my least favorite ruth strips...personally! I don't think it looks much like him. I prefer the w516 or w519 but they are likely more expensive.

I remember what strips used to sell for...back in the 80's...and they were "shit"...you could get them for pennies on the dollar compared to other issues.

So to me paying high 3-low 4 figures for a nice strip is ridiculous and I'd never do it!

Just my opinion...I like some strips...but many are cartoonish and bear little resemblance to the player.

For my money if I were looking for a cheap ruth...I'd hit the 30's premiums...baby ruth, butterfinger...they're oversized and beautiful, period and reasonably priced.

I agree on the numeric grade issue, this one just happens to be numerically graded. I also agree the card really looks nothing like Ruth but I do like the design and color scheme to a lesser extent. I'm a little torn I'll admit and its not a done deal yet anyways

Most important thing is that you like the card. If you do then great. If you don't then wait until you find a better card. Best of luck.

I agree with the others in that the W514 doesn't look much like Ruth. It's one of the first Ruth cards with the Yankees, and the W514 is probably the most widely collected 1920s strip card set since it has the Black Sox and Joe Jax in the set. If you wanted a Ruth strip card, there are probably still better options like the W516, W519 or W520/W522.

I like strip cards as long as they feature an image of the player generated from a photograph, as opposed to a crude drawing. I purchased my 1922 W573 George Sisler from Steve Verkman (always good, consistent dealings with him, by the way) because it was Sisler's .420 year (with 44 doubles, 16 triples, 8 HR's and 51 stolen bases), and he became the first MVP that season. With a photographic image of his follow-through and his facial features rather readily discernible, its one of my favorite cards, despite only being graded SGC Authentic.

Highest regards to all,

Larry A. Smith

As others have said, some of the strips are decent representations of the subject but others are akin to little kids drawing their families. If given the option I would prefer a card with a photographic look

I like the W517 for that reason.

The premiums are a very good value as well.
