With your permission, may I slightly change the topic:
In my nearly thirty years in the hobby, I have either owned or had consigned to me a T206 Wagner, a U.S. Caramel Lindstrom, a 1914 Baltimore News Ruth, about four T206 Planks, a couple of Magies, a 1952 Topps Mantle, and countless other rarities....but never once did I own or even handle a 1933 Goudey Lajoie. That one will be my white whale. ![]() |

I've looked, but shockingly I haven't ever seen an 1898-99 National Copper Plate of any of the guys I'm looking for (Wagner, J. Collins, B. Wallace, Flick, or Willis). Yes, I've seen scans online, but that doesn't count!!

Several years back I had a deal lined up for an N173 cabinet of either a Phillies or A's player (can't remember which) for my "Philly" type card collection. It would have been the first N173 that I owned.
Sadly, the seller backed out of the transaction and I am still looking for one to this day. |

the good news: I do have a D304 (Charles Herzog).
the not so good news: I don't have a Fan card---and never will. As I thought about this I remembered how hard it was for me to find the R card Knot Hole League, even though they don't cost much. When I finally found it, I bought all the fellow had. all the best, barry |

Leon,
Please stop posting in this thread! Between the Red Crofts Candy and now the Virginia Extra, everytime you post I have to keep adding to the list of type cards that I need for my "Philly" type card collection. Thank goodness the E221s don't fit the parameters of my collection so I can ignore those beauties ![]() |

I'm a photo historian and was a writer/researcher for the standard academic reference Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography, published out of London, and a few days ago a guy emailed me images of a CDV sized 1800s cloth photo (non sport, studio portrait of a guy)-- basically a tintype but on cloth instead of metal. He asked me about it as he could find no information on cloth photos. He called it his 'mystery photo.' I said I knew cloth tintypes were known to exist, but they are so rare I'd never even seen an image of one before his emails. He found it in in a 1800s CDV collection.
In his first email, he just described in it words as he thought it would be impolite to email images without asking first. I half expected from the words the images would show a commercial lithograph on silk, ala the baseball tobacco silk premiums, but it turned out to be a real photograph. He just put it up on eBay if anyone's interested, and I can provide the link if asked. I don't spam auctions and am not a bidder or know the seller other than is emails, but it fit this thread. I can testify that its an ultra rare photo type, a type most people haven't even heard of before. For historical background, it was technically possible to make tintypes on cloth, leather and wood, but it was almost never done. Just as it was technically possible for Topps to have printed cards on bricks. Last edited by drcy; 02-19-2014 at 12:46 PM. |

Hey Daryl, please don't encourage Leon to become a set collector, especially of a set like the T216 VEs, for I fear that he will become even more of a HOARDER, much to the chagrin of type collectors, like me!

Am lucky to have a nice variety of type cards - a K Bat here, a Western Playground there, couple of N173s, a Big Eater, you name it - but have never been able to land a Boston Garter Sepia. Been the penultimate bridesmaid on two or three different occasions. Really neat cards.

I am sure glad Leon is here to make you all jealous, otherwise this thread would be boring with just a bunch of letter/number combinations. It is nice to have a picture to go with the set numbers, I don't always remember which is which.

Great cards Leon, as usual
![]() I think it's interesting that they used that^^ image of Jennings on the Tango Eggs Jennings card (which I think I just saw recently in the pick up thread). I've only owned (as far as pre-war goes) a total of 8 different type cards, so my list for "but never a...." would be waaay to long ![]() Great cards everyone, always a pleasure to see these works of art!!
