I'll kick off the month of April...
I just picked up this rare 1938 Johnny Vander Meer Foto Fun photo card and original cardboard frame. Very unusual and cool! Anybody out there know much about this Foto Fun series of photo cards and how widely they were distributed? Last edited by Scott Garner; 04-05-2012 at 05:21 PM. |

Just got this 1935 Scranton Miners team signed photo featuring a really early VanderMeer, also on a more modern note picked up a 2008 International League Champions Scranton Yankees ring. It was player issued and is a great addition to my Scranton Wilkes Barre minor league baseball collection. The ring is resting on a Butch Wynegars hat from last season.

I always seem to be at least a month behind before I can get to posting here and hope my March additions can sneak in without too much objection.
We've done pretty well over the past two months and here are some of the highlights... 1. Circa 1905-1910 Reach Mushroom Bat...truly the nicest of its kind that we've had the good fortune to come across. 2. Circa 1920's, 36", Bone Rubbed, Ty Cobb model bat. http://www.dugouttreasures.com/book.cfm |

1. Circa 1920's, Babe Ruth model bat...our 6th...one can never have too many Ruth bats, can they?
2. We're gonna say that this circa 1918 Spalding bat is kinda scarce. Nevermind the great Bennie Kauff endorsement, but its the lone example of a Spalding bat marked with the WWI era YMCA logo that we've ever seen. The interesting thing is that the YMCA logo is depicted differently here on a Spalding bat than all the Lousiville Slugger examples that we've come across or reside in our collection. http://www.dugouttreasures.com/book.cfm |

1. Circa 1900 crescent padded baseman's mitt. Really solid example of a late 19th Century/ Turn of the Century mitt and the first example of a grommet back (hook and eye) mitt that we've owned.
2. Stellar example of a Spalding Official National League Ball with John Heydler Pres. stamp...its got a box, too. 3. Cool circa 1939 Independent League jersey made by Lowe and Campbell with a great Centennial patch on the sleeve. Well, that's about all of it for now. We did also pick up an 1895 Harvard BBC Trophy and glass stein with the image of a 19th century plater painted on it...I'll try to picture and post that before too long. Thanks for lookin'...good luck and happy hunting to all. Jonathan http://www.dugouttreasures.com/book.cfm |

Nothing huge, but I just picked up a Carl Erskine circa 1950's pinback button.
Erskine pitched two no-hitters in the 1950's. I'm adding this to my no-hit pitcher collection on pinback buttons. Seems like 2012 has been the year of the pinback for me so far.... Last edited by Scott Garner; 04-12-2012 at 07:43 PM. |

Was thrilled to be the winner of this 6 inch baseball trophy/globet. I believe it is circa 1880 or so as it was an award for Base Ball Throwing and not "Pitching" which I believe came about with the overhand type delivery beginning around 1885 or so. The New York Athletic Club was formed in 1868 and the N.Y. company that made this trophy started in business in 1875 and closed sometime in 1909. Thanks for any opinions if I might have the time frame wrong. Also, would be interested if anyone has seen others in the past with similar markings or any other info you might be able to add. Thanks.

[QUOTE=Forever Young;983483]Always loved this photo... found it April of 2012.
That is one of my favorite Mantle images as well. I picked up these photos recently. I normally shy away from wire photos but picked up the Clemente as it's date is the day after his death and the caption content relates to his death as well. The others are Dizzy Dean (1941), Satchel Paige (1965), and Rick Ferrell (1937). The Chick Hafey is a 1931 Metropolitan Sudios card. Last edited by 71buc; 04-14-2012 at 06:20 PM. |

Picked up a contract between the Chicago White Sox and the Indianapolis Indians from 1959...Still trying to gain a better understanding on the history of the contract, but looks to be players rights sold from Indians to Sox...
Also as a nice touch, signed by Comiskey.... |

Not sure when I picked this up, but finally got around to doing something with it in April, so here goes:
Original George Burke 8x10 Photo of Charlie Grimm Arguing with the Cubs Mascot ![]() Originally, I had thought this was the batboy or possibly the child of one of the players, but thought he looked familiar somehow, possibly from other Cubs photos I had seen of that period. I asked one of my consignors who is an avid Cubs fan (and who gladly added the photo to his collection) if he recognized the child or knew who he was, and he thought that it was one of the Little Rascals child actors, possibly Chubby Chaney. Well, he was very close, as a little more research revealed that it was actually Paul Dominick, Chaney's successor in the role of the obese kid in the gang which Dominick played for two years starting in late 1935: ![]() Paul Dominick as Chicago Cubs mascot circa September 23, 1935 A little more digging, and look what else turned up! ![]() From The Ludington Daily News, September 25, 1935 Looking back at the Cubs' record in late 1935, it appears that Dominick joined up as team mascot on or about September 4 of that year (assuming the second photo's caption is correct), and remained with them through the end of the season and likely in the World Series as well. It also seems likely to my mind that Hal Roach may have discovered Dominick as a result of his appearances on the field with the Cubs. Roach is reported to have had difficulty finding the kind of obese kid that could carry on the tradition of Joe Cobb and Chubby Chaney, supposedly due to advancements in medical science which made it extremely rare for children to be that overweight. Anyway, needless to say, I was thrilled to have made the connection, all the moreso knowing that the new owner will be just as thrilled for the Our Gang connection as the Chicago Cubs one. Edited to add: If anyone knows how Dominick found his way to the Cubs dugout in the first place, I would be glad to hear that story as well. Last edited by thecatspajamas; 04-21-2012 at 12:18 PM. |

Chock this one up to extreme patience as a collector...
An eBay seller first listed this vintage signed Paul Dean 4 x 6 George Brace photo w/ a BIN for $99 over two years ago. This was a nice fit for my no-hit pitcher signed photo collection, but I wasn't sure I wanted to spend $100 for it. After the seller ran the signed photo through a few 30 day auctions with no bites, I offered him $75 for it which he immediately turned down. A few months later, I tried again, and no-dice once again. After two consecutive years of running this photo through 24 consecutive 30 day auctions, he finally started an auction at $74.99 with a BIN of $99 about a week ago. ![]() I finally got it for the exact price I offered him. ![]() |

1930 Lincoln Links of the Nebraska State League team signed baseball. Best name on the ball is Les Nunamaker. Now the oldest team signed ball in my collection.

just picked this up after a long dry spell.Fantastic shape and better than the other two I know of. One from Halper and the other from Hunts Auctions. Notice the stickers for 2 cents over the orig. 3 cents on the label. Do you think i should leave the black labels or take them off. Now have 8 cigar boxes. anyone have any to show.

A good month with an interesting mix of woodcuts, supplements and a calendar cutout. I think the calendar cutout is from late 1880's or 1890's and could be Al Spalding.

Hi Bill, the last one is a woodcut from an 1892 Once A Week publication. It is titled 'Opening of the Baseball Season in New York' and includes images of Buck Ewing, Amos Rusie, Hardie Richardson and Dan Richardson. |
