I completed another HOFer subset os 1938 Goudey with cartoons only, low grade; however, I am having a hard time finding the Bobby Doerr with the cartoons in lower grade for now I am substituting one without the cartoons for now. If anyone has a cartoon one they would be willing to trade for my Doerr or just sell me one, please let me know.
I also started this thread to talk about this awesome set. From what I know these cards are kinda rare and are a continuation of the 33 Goudey set, supposedly. Does anybody know if these were only regionally distributed? Short printed? Were the cartoons ones shorter printed than the non-cartoon ones? |

Congrats Zach. That's a great looking subset. We don't talk too much about the 1938 (R323) Goudeys but they are an interesting set with a lot of HOF'ers....I remember getting my Dimaggio card right after he passed away.....

I saw no purpose in collecting the non-cartoon ones, the cartoon ones are just more card for the money ![]() |

Id never call the 1938 R323 cards rare, far from. They are scarce compared to most of the other Goudey regular issue sets, but the 1941s are even scarcer overall. The "rarest" R323 card is the Lombardi Red Sox Error card, and I think it is undervalued IMO.
IMO the R323's are scarcer than the earlier Goudey Gum pack sets because by 1938 Goudey and other card companies went more the Premium route where cards were distributed by turning in wrappers to the store clerk for a larger premium card (ie all the R314 and R303 subsets) I dont think they were as available for purchase as the earlier 1933-36 Era cards. PS. Love that grade your collection is, nice well loved solid cards. The Doerr should come around soon, there are plenty of them out there in that grade. Last edited by fkw; 03-15-2012 at 02:08 AM. |
