What a horrible story: HOF catcher Gary Carter died today. What great memories I had of him as a Mets fan. RIP big guy!

Very sad and so young. I guess it was brain cancer and was only discovered last May.....here is an article...

I always looked up to Gary Carter growing up. Catcher was my position and I will always remember watching him in an Expos uniform blocking a ball in the dirt during the 84 All-Star game and my dad telling me, "That is how you block a ball." RIP Kid.
Best, Andy |

An awesome baseball player and even better person.
As a kid growing up in Canada in the late 70's-early 80's, I had the opportunity to watch Gary Carter play the game the way it is supposed to be played. In Dick Williams' book "No More Mr. Nice Guy", he describes his great admiration for "The Kid". And for the record, compliments did not flow easily from Mr Williams. I sometimes get upset with some people's notion that Carter was "overrated", or that his stats make him a less-worthy Hall of Famer. But if the naysayers had the opportunity to watch him play during his time in Montreal, they would never question his greatness. So sad that he had to go through cancer, and that we lost him so soon. Sad news. I choose Montreal as my law school from 1979 to 1982, not because of academics, but because of my love for the Expos and Gary Carter.
He will be missed. Max ![]()

I was never a fan of Carter the player, never liked the Mets and I was a huge Carlton Fisk fanatic so I hated anyone compared to him a the catcher spot. I did appreciate the way he played and how great he was off the field though. Here is a great video just posted, his last AB in the majors

John (Z28dude)- Great, great video. That is what the game is all about. That one video actually gave me pause and brought back a bit of the game I have missed for so many years. Thanks for posting it. RIP Gary.

I am so devastated about this! Heard about this little while ago. I had the privilege of meeting Gary at a local charity event a few years back and such a wonderful human being. A true HOFer in every aspect! My condolences to his entire family!
RIP Gary Carter....you will never be forgotten only your wonderful memories live on!! |

Thanks for posting that video link JD.
Wow, not that it wasn't expected after hearing about his condition, but truly a sad day. He epitomized a role model athlete. Too bad that aren't a lot more like him out there today.

RIP "KID" You will be missed.
As a Mets fan you brought me many great moments the first as a 21 year old sitting in a bitterly cold Shea Stadium on Opening Day 1985 and hitting a 10th inning homerun off Neil Allen. ![]() |

A lot was made of his card collecting when he first came up, but I never heard anything more later in his career. I remember an article where he said '59 Topps was the first set he completed. As a Cardinals fan, I couldn't root for the guy, but as a baseball card fan, I couldn't really root against him either.

I met Gary in 1985 while he did some work for our company. Really nice guy. We worked with many baseball players, Aaron, Bench, DiMaggio, Cepeda, Oliva among them and Gary was a genuinely friendly guy. Can't say that about many others. Will miss him and being exactly my age makes me think how lucky it is to have one's health. One day healthy, next day cancer.

With all the notoriety of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, people forget that Carter had 3 RBI in each of Games 3 and 4 (2 HR in Game 4) in Fenway to lead the Mets from the verge of extinction back into a tie. Very depressing games for this attendee.
