Default Topps 1956 Mays and Eraser Power...

If you read the description on this '56 Mays, the sellers states it was "power erased." Can anybody enlighten me as to what that means??? My apologies, since the Mays card is not prewar, but perhaps the eraser concept might be prewar relevant.

By the way, kudos to the person who "power erased" this card. At least they were considerate enough to mark the back side (sure wish all card doctors were so thoughtful).

Lovely Day...

I think the bottom border was made larger by removing (power erasing) the bottom part of the pic. I looked at a few other '56 Mays and his signature doesn't touch the bottom border like this card.

Not sure how it's done though.

Default 1956 Topps and Eraser Power

Got a friend who is an architect and back in the day when they actually used a pencil and paper to draw on they would have an electric eraser that they used to completely erase unwanted lines or corrections. That might be what he is referring to. You held the thing in your hand, turned it on and the eraser at the tip would rotate at a variable speed. Kind of looked like a Dremel tool if I remember correctly. Not sure if they still use them since most architects use computers and CAD programs to draw on now but, they're probably still around somewhere.

Power erasing is what a poster above described, taking a high grade Topps or Bowman card that does not have frame lines, such as must 50's cards and "centering" the card by power erasing the short border side of the card. Was highly used by some upper mid west dealers back a few years back. Can usually be detected under a loupe as color is still present in the minute depressions of the cardboard surface.

If you ever have doubts just measure the image part of a known good card and compare it with the suspect card, the printed area will always be the same size of legit cards and smaller on power erased versions.
