I have easy access to The State (Columbia, SC) newspapers. I came across this 1911 story on Joe Jackson, with an interesting version on the origin of his Shoeless nickname. I've never heard this one before. It makes me wonder if a 1911 article is more or less reliable than the "sore feet" story we've all heard.

Interesting read, there John. I was not aware he played in the Mill League for a short stint. A Pitcher ? Shoeless off the wooden slab ?? Joe still continues to amaze me. At some point, possibly after the first steroid era guy gets in the HOF, we have to go ahead and put Joe and Pete in as I still contend it is about their accomplishments on the field. Sorry, got sidetracked.
