What is a approiate bid on a graded "authentic" card if it looks NM-MT to the naked eye? Should it be poor, vg, ex, or better? How is the value determined?

By what you are willing to pay for it

Cards that look NRMT, but are graded A are typically trimmed. They would often be valued at Poor or less, but as mentioned, it will depend on what buyers are willing to pay since they have a certain eye appeal.

The cards in tonight's Andy Madec auction should give you a good idea.

Most high demand cards if they are authentic grade due to altering but look NM will almost always outsell a poor grade card. They often seem to sell in the g-vg range. Again it depends on the scarcity of the issue and the overall desirabilty to have that particular card with nice eye appeal.

This card was deemed 'miscut' therefore given an 'A'. Certainly more desirable than if it was a well-worn card.

Since I primarily collect ungraded cards, I’ve simply accepted the fact that my collection has more trimmed cards in it than I can identify. The results from Andy Madec’s auction didn’t surprise me at all. It’s my belief that a vast number of trimmed or alterned cards have made it into holders, and that trimmed or altered cards will gain more acceptance with time ... |
