1945-46 Caramelo Deportivo Marsans and receipt

This is close enough to pre-war that I will use my moderating priviledges to post on the main board. I don't post too many off topics, relative to other posts, so this can be one OT if anyone has an issue with it.

One of the better known Cuban issues is the 100 card set, Caramelo Deportivo. (Sporting Caramels). They covered the 1945-46 Cuban winter league season and include many future major leaguers and stars of the Negro Leagues. They were made to be put into an album, the fronts have a card number. The backs have the player's name and a few biographical and career details. Along with this Armando Marsans card came a receipt from the Asociacion Nacional de Peloteros Profesionales de Cuba. This receipt was given to Marsans after he paid $3 pesos for his monthly membership fee that all players were required to pay. If anyone has any Cuban cards, or things relating to Cuban cards, show them if you would like to. We don't have too many discussions about Cuban issues, players and the league, but they were/are(?) certainly an important part of the game. regards

I've handled several Caramelo de Portivo sets and I think they are pretty neat, considering they were made on poor paper stock and are really thin and fragile. Even the album is not much higher quality than newspaper stock, and given the heat and humidity in Cuba, high grade sets are hard to come by. Many near complete sets of 99 or fewer show up, but they are rarely complete due to card #73 Napoleon Reyes, which was severely short printed. That one may be worth the other 99 cards combined. I also like the team insignia cards, as they are the only ones that are in color (I assume they were made that way although they could have been hand colored after the fact).

Neat paperwork; not something you see every day. I love the Cuban issues in boxing. Here is a 1920s Romeo y Julieta Rocky Kansas (just elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame) and a 1947 Propagandas Montiel Joe Louis:

A handfull of Cuban HOFer cards. Actually, this brings up a question: In what category of our BST section would people likely offer Cuban (and other Latin American) cards? Tobacco? 1920's - 1940's? I've never known where to focus my search. Thanks.

Which BST section for Cuban material? You can always go by the dates if nothing else. Since this one, Caramelo Deportivo, was a 1940's caramel issue it could go in the 20's-40's section or the E card section. I classify them as "R-Unc" on my website for "Recent Candy and Gum- Unclassified". Hope this helps...

I wish my father was around to see this display, because when I started collecting cards in the early 1980's, I didn't know these cards existed.
These are players that he would talk to me about.
In 1944, he took this 13 yo to the Polo Grounds to watch the NY Giants take on the Pirates, it was my first game.
Nap Reyes played in that game, but my father made it a point to point out the Giants pitching coach, and that's when he told me the story.
The pitching coach was an old friend of his from Cuba, and around 1932 or '33, when he pitched for the Giants he would often come by to where my father worked, it was a bakery that specialized in French Bakery, cakes, and Latino take out food ... plus a hang out for Cuban players like Miguel Angel Gonzalez, Adolfo Luque the pitcher, and Champ Kid Chocolate, the boxer.

Anyway, when I was about 1 1/2 or two, my mother brought me by, and it happen to be a day that Luque was holding court with all his Cuban companeros around him.
My introduction to Luque was an enjoyable one ... depending on who's telling the story ... my father, or mother.
As I understand it, Luque put a hand under each armpit, raised me to his eye level, at that point, my father, and all the companeros were chuckling, then, being that Adolfo was a ball player, he tossed me just a little bit in the air and caught me ... my father and all the companeros were now roaring with laughter ..... NOT my Mother .......... I must have had a surprised look on my face.
The kicker is ... I don't remember any part of it.

I wish my father was around to see these ... any more?

I started collecting a few Cubans earlier this year; I now own 23 cards. I started the collection because I have a good friend who is Cuban and he collected Propagandas Montiel cards as a child before the Castro revolution tossed him and his family out of Cuba. He gets pleasure out of looking at my collection and asks if I have any new Cubans to show him whenever we get together. The cards are seldom found in good shape, but they do have a lot of American HOFers in the set. I have a pretty nice Matty (the single player), a cool Feller portrait, and a very rough Joe Dimaggio. I posted a few pictures below.

That's quite an interesting site you have, I'm going to have to spend a little more time there and check it all out.
For one thing, I found the information surrounding your boxing card guide very interesting, it was bringing back some memories of my interest in boxing during the forties, and fifties - Sugar Ray, Kid Gavilan, Rocky Graziano, Cerdan, and the Brown Bomber ... I once had the pleasure of meeting Joe Louis,and having a long conversation with him ..... Gotta go back, and find out the price for your boxing card guide.

Hi Matt- hope you are well, it's been a while since we last spoke. I once auctioned a Punch Cigarros (it was the Viola that Kenny Cole showed) and as you can see it was just the card without that fancy background. But as I look at yours it appears to be a card glued to that background. Is that the way the Punch cards were issued? Interesting to see this for the first time.

The Punch cards were originally issued as small photos pasted to a cardboard back with an ornate border. The cards are extremely rare in any form, but from what I know only a small handful have survived with the back intact. I'll try to attach a few more scans.

My understanding is there are three ways to find the card. With a stamp, punches or complete. It was a redemption card for a prize so almost all were used that way. There is a thread on here with a guy who knows more about that stuff

While it is possible to find one "unredeemed" that would most certainly be a red flag no matter what.
