Default 2014 Goals

Here were my goals in 2013

E107 HOFer's - nothing in 2013 - will add one in 2014, guaranteed!

Boston Store Joe Jackson - SGC 30-40, PSA 2-3 - Finished!!!!

low grade Babe Ruth rookie - prefer ad back - keep looking

1952 Topps Mantle rookie - nice centering and eye appeal - keep looking

My Boston Store Jackson took priority over all the other cards I wanted. Can't wait for 2014.

Tony

My 2013 t206 goal was to reach 100 cards. I'm currently at 92. I still have a chance with my birthday who knows? If not, my goal for 2014 to have 120 t206s total in my set.

Tony,

What a card. That dark uni just pops with eye appeal. Seeing as you well exceeded your initial grade goal, I'd say that haul alone makes 2013 an awesome year for your collection!

What is up with the flip on that card? Was there a time the SGC flip didn't have a barcode? Also there are two different fonts, the font for the set name and the name of the card don't match. Was the flip just edited for your photo sharing?

No editing, they've used several generations of flips over the years. I forget offhand to which period this one conforms. I'm sure there must be a record of the flip generations around here somewhere, alas my food coma laziness prohibits me from searching at the moment...

Even the first generation had a barcode. I can't think of a single SGC flip that didn't have one. I checked the number and it didn't show up on SGC website either (but I have known of legit cards doing this before too). Also I have never known them to use two different fonts for the text. It doesn't make sense for the font for "1909" and "e90-1" to be different (the rest of each line is off too, but is very noticeable looking at the numbers).

There is a current thread about the labels. http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?p=1210647
There is no mention of a generation where they went without the barcode.

I have seen several SGC cards with the two different fonts over the years; the second line in these rarer instances looks more compressed. As to the missing barcode, I can't imagine my scanner missing it, so it must not be there.

In any event, I am sure the card is legit and is a solid 20. If ever I am in the selling market, will be sure to have it updated.

Example of fonts:

I really am just curious because it just looked off to me because I don't recall the barcode missing on SGC. I did find the font compression on other slabs. I see this card sold through REA at one time and the barcode is missing on their scan so it isn't your scanner. I am just curious how long they made flips like that. Also it is the only flip I see while looking around where the card type text is justified to the "SGC" above it.

All good; I always find these random quirks fun to learn about myself. I'm sure someone around these parts can shed some light on such flips and their rarity.

Beautiful cards everyone...

Well, I didn't set a 2013 goal in that thread, but it was to make progress on my Jackie Robinson Bond Bread set, and to build my Jackie Robinson master set.

I did make progress on my BB set, and I had reached #2 on PSA registry's JR master set. I was also interviewed and had many of my cards featured in the Jackie Robinson SMR issue this year. I actually ended up selling most of my JR master set, as my wife and I are looking to purchase a home in the next year or so.

As for 2014, most of my money will be going towards inching closer to that 20% down payment, but for cards / memorabilia, here's the goal:

1) Complete the 1947 Jackie Robinson Bond Bread set (1 card to go)
2) Get into Pre-War by purchasing one of these cards: 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig, t206 Cobb Bat Off, 3) Mathewson Dark Cap, Ruth E series (throwing).
3) Pick up a Jackie Robinson auto

I believe that 2015-2016 will be the year that I can really start expanding my collection.

My number one goal for 2014 is to get organized. This forum renewed my interest in my collection - especially The Monster Number thread. First time thru the boxes, I'm at 350/524, so my goal is get as deep into the 400's as possible - target 450. That will take some willing trade partners, but first I have to get organized and learn how to scan and upload cards to BST and PM's. Hopefully, one of the college educated tech-wizards that are hanging around here eating my food and drinking my booze will help.

The excel spreadsheet on the T206 Resource website is a huge help in organizing The Monster.

I would like to orchestrate a bulk trade of T205's and/or T207's for some T206's.

Cheers

I don't think I declared any 2013 goals either...in fear of some jacking up the prices on my desired items!

nonetheless...i was able to add a handful of really tough miller big gloves to my run..i'm hoping I can add another 1 or 2 (if I'm really lucky this year) as well as continue to upgrade a handful of e94's...and look to add to a few 19th century sets I'm casually going after.

MY collecting these days is mostly spectating...as what I'm looking for rarely comes up. I'm sure some of you can relate!!!!

I also missed the 2013 goals thread but I pretty much accomplished what I wanted to do this year.

As for 2014 I feel like my collecting goals sometimes get away from me and the sets I collect tend to take on a life of their own and get too big. I wouldn't mind parting with one or two of my major holdings to free up space and money to pursue new interests. If that doesn't happen (as I wouldn't want to have to slowly piece them out--more like an all-or-nothing type sale) then the following would be what I would like to accomplish...

1.) Get my 1911-1928 Zeenut collection to around 2,200 different or more... currently at around 2,050. (Also like to get 1911-1938 full run to the 2,500 mark... currently at around 2,200.)

2.) Would love to add some new E121-like cards to that accumulation, especially the early sets like Holsum Bread, Standard Biscuit, Herpolsheimer's, and perhaps a Shotwell. Get the number of different E121-like cards up from the current level of roughly 525 or so different front/back combinations.

3.) Add some Colgan's Tin Tops and Red Borders. Currently at 53 Red Borders and 47 Tin Tops.

Default 2013 to 2014 Goals

My 2013 goals will be:

2013:
> trim the fat (xtra cards that don't fit my collection) - failed

> trim the fat (from the belly) - epic fail

> take a short "holiday" from collecting to enjoy the birth of my first child in April (assuming all goes as projected) - best day of my entire life

> buy only one or two *significant* cards missing from my HOF "rookie" collection and avoid falling into the trap of buying cards that only marginally fit my collection - epic fail - purchased over 400 cards and added two new "sets" to my collection...Helmar Stamps + Japanese HOF

> avoid the temptation to buy cards that I already own because the price looks "too good" and because I assume I will somehow be able to resell for more - fail, as always

> remind myself daily that I am NOT a card dealer, I am a card COLLECTOR! - fail, yet again, the temptation to buy "underpriced cards" is just too great

2014:

I'll try to actually attain the goals above (w/ the exception of another child)!!!

>> add only two to five "signficant" HOF rookie cards
>> get to 60-75% complete for the Helmar Stamps set - trade/sell extras

Had several goals in 2013, succeeded in purchasing a t206 green Cobb in psa 4 (thanks texxxxx), reached the 300 mark on different graded t206's, also got a good start on e90-1, failed to purchase other higher end t206's at reasonable prices.

Goals for 2014, t206 Mathewson portrait - sovereign reverse psa 4, t206 Johnson portrait psa 5, add 10 e90-1's, begin t205 in earnest, finish my 1953 topps set.

2013
1. Start T206 Cubs master set --- reached 154 of 425+ thus far.
2. Finish E91A ---- nope.
3. Finish T205 Cubs with HLC/AB/Sov/Cycle/Hassan backs --- nope.
4. Make it to a National to meet some of you and buy Wonka a beer I owe him --- nope.
5. Be less stubborn when selling.

2014

1. Reach 250/425+ for my T206 Cubs Master set.
2. Finish E91A Cubs, though I haven't added one in 11 months...
3. Refocus on my T205 Cubs subset that has taken a backseat to T206 Cubs, though I may abandon my T205 Cubs at some point.
4. Make it to a National to meet some of you and buy Wonka a couple of beers I owe him.
5. Be less stubborn when selling.

My collecting goal for 2014 is to find more T206 scrap for Johnny's collection.

Seriously though, find a few more T206s and get a little closer to finishing my set.

I started my t206 collection this year in January. purchased around 23 so far this year. I would like to pick up a cobb this weekend at the philly show. for 2014, I would like to collect more of the hall of famers so I may not buy as many commons. but hey, who knows what I will buy.... depends on the mood and the deal. also, would like to consider collecting another set as well but not sure if that is a good idea.

Would like to get really close to finishing up some sets:

I just hit 460 T206s in SGC50 or better today.

My goal for 2014 is to hit the 500 mark in SGC50 or better.

I only have 18 "commons" to go and only 8 Southern Leaguers to go, so that means I have quite a few HOFers to add.

Once you hit the 450 mark, it gets difficult and expensive, especially since I have a minimum grade of SGC50 to shoot for.

1. Continue to sell off my modern collection (already sold off about half of it) and try real hard to stop buying that stuff - except for an occasional Pirate.

2. Double my T206 set (currently at 75) to 150. Including getting an AB back and either a Wojo Hands at Chest or Matty White Cap.

3. Triple my E121 set (just started and currently at 10) to 30 including getting at least 5 HOFers.

4. Add at least 10 new/different Pirate Pre-War Types.

5. Spend just the right amount of money on that stuff so that my wife does not file for divorce (I can get away with slightly more than she spends on shoes....that's our deal).

Oh yeah.....one more - attend the National in Cleveland and meet some of you guys.

jason, that's an impressive list of goals you got there...and maybe it's a good thing that your wife spends money on shoes, so it gives you two a nice balance

Phil...that's going to be one impressive set when you get done with it! Make sure you share when you get it completed

As for me...

1. Finish my T201 set...only need 8, so it should be done within a few months if the right ones come along

2. No definitive number on the amount of T206's I want to accumulate for the year, but I'd say on average, close to one per week...so we'll say 40...that will get me over the 200 mark.

3. Grab anything that really gets my attention...could be anything. I collect a wide array of cards, so I have to keep it somewhat open and not restrict myself or I'll go nuts

4. Keep seeing everyone's beautiful pieces...this will go as scheduled as long as everyone keeps posting their gems...love looking at everyone's collection here on Net54...most recently, Steven's CJ set...pure beauty!

Default Goals

2013 - added to my collection of cards that were produced in Louisiana.

Made it to the 50 card mark on T213-2's, added 1920 and 1921 Holsum, added Mino and 1917 Weil Baking. Completed all 3 Kotton backs.

2014 - get the T213-2 collection to the half way point. Try to pick up a low grade T211 and Tango Eggs and T215-2. See if I might get lucky and turn up a cheap Virginia Extra or Mothers Bread or Pirate.

And, as always, try to purchase modern collections to flip so I can use the profits to buy more items for my personal collection.

I'm going to try not to be influenced by this forum and keep my T206 collection at 1 (Joseph Patrick Moran of the Cubs). I would like to pick up a seat from either the Polo Grounds or Ebbetts Field though, however it probably won't happen.

I went through what people had planned for this year. I have to say some very tough goals but should be a good year. Happy new year and best of luck n your goals.

Pre-war: The 1934 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig is at the top of my want list. Before the clock strikes midnight on December 31st next year, I will own this card. I saw Wonka's, and just fell in love with it. Mine won't be as nice, but a variety of a '34 Gehrig will sit in my SDP soon. Other cards I would really like to add: A T205 Christy Mathewson, a T202 Cobb Steals Third, '33 Goudey Al Simmons, 1915 Cracker Jack Walter Johnson, '33 Goudey Rogers Hornsby. A '33 Goudey Babe Ruth will be in 2015.

Of course, my focus will be on the T206 set. I plan on adding my first Ty Cobb (bat off shoulder), as well as a Matty dark cap, Lajoie with bat, an Eddie Collins (still looking for that one that wows me), an Addie Joss portrait, a Hal Chase with pink background, and I'm looking to upgrade my Walter Johnson to a PSA 4 and cross it over to SGC. That's my favorite card, so why not? That's a priority along with the Gehrig. I also really want a Tris Speaker, a Hugh Duffy and a Sam Crawford throwing, an Ed Walsh and a Keeler portrait. I'm going to also pick up a Hughie Jennings two hand if I can. Love that card. It's the embodiment of pure joy. Two non Hall of Famers I'd like to add are the Dutch Revelle Southern Leaguer, and the Pattee portrait. Edit: oh yeah, and the man in my avatar.

Vintage cards: two of my all-time favorite cards, a 1953 Bowman Color Stan Musial and a 1958 Topps Roberto Clemente. I want to upgrade my 1975 Topps Robin Yount to a PSA 8.5, pick up a George Brett 1975 Topps, and a 1953 Bowman Color Mickey Mantle. Then I'd like to add several from the 1956 Topps set, including Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson and Ted Williams, maybe a Warren Spahn, Eddie Mathews and a nice Sandy Koufax. I might have to leave the '55 Clemente and the '54 Aaron for the year after, but I will pick up a few other Clementes towards my master set. Maybe a '61 and a '66. I'd like to pick up a Willie Mays, too.

Modern: a 2002 Bowman Chrome Joe Mauer auto, a 2005 Bowman Chrome Prince Fielder auto, and I better pick up a 2013 Byron Buxton Bowman Chrome auto before it explodes in price.

Some football cards, too. A high grade 1981 Topps Joe Montana to replace the one I traded away like an idiot. An '84 Topps Dan Marino, and a 2005 Playoff Contenders Aaron Rodgers. I also need to get the last Packers to finish off my 1965 Philadelphia Gum team set: Jim Taylor, Forrest Gregg, Willie Davis and Henry Jordan.

So yeah, just a couple of cards to pick up. I obviously won't hit all of these, but I've got a good outline of what I want for the next year or two.

Well, these goals were an epic fail, mostly because I decided that I needed to rebuild my savings before going hog wild spending on my collection.

I only managed to pick up two of the cards from my 2014 goals list, a very nice PSA 4 Dutch Revelle T206 portrait, and the Sam Crawford throwing T206. Both are in my image gallery.

I will be working on my collection soon.
