Looked like all the card visible (not many) were piedmont backs..I had emailed the seller and asked if he knew of anything other than piedmonts and he wasn't even sure what I was talking about I dont think. I was just wondering the chances of striking gold with a couple other backs there.

Edited to say..my max by the way was going to be $1600..so I was way off..but was ready to pull the trigger with four seconds to go and by then too late anyway. I kept holding out hope since it wasn't really in the right category.

Andy, apparently it is a T210 Series 3 Thebo. Wierd how yellow it is, but that is also the same series that can be found with the orange borders, so they may have just forgotten the red ink completely on the Thebo.

I was in there. There is a Bud Shappe error on that sheet along with some nice t210's and maybe some rare backs. Nice pick up. I would be curious to know about the backs.

I was watching them too but in the end there is too much of a probability that when you remove those cards they just won't look so great. There were some reds that looked orange, I think a McGinnity. Great group if condition and/or getting them graded isn't an issue. And the Young portrait and Cobb had to be on the bottom row. What luck!

There is no question a conservator can remove the cards, but the backs are likely to have at minimum a permanent stain.

It wouldn't be cheap, and $1000 give or take wouldn't surprise me. But if it could be done in a way that the cards would have clean backs, it would be worth every penny.

I've had varing degrees of success with cards attatched to newspaper, some good, some bad, it all depends on the type of glue used, and the condition it was stored in.

I'm just happy to have another challenge or another small "find" as I think these were collected by the original owner, and attatched many years ago.



Upon further examination it looks like most of the cards are attatched to a piece of board with some newspaper on the back on some showing on the front, so some may have staining and some may be easy. Time will tell..

I noticed that there were no cards from the 350-460 series, so I assumed these cards were attached prior the issuance of that series. There were a few cards that I would love to look at a little closer if you decide to remove them. Congrats again and may all your backs be Drums.

Hi Martin,
I think your right. It looks like I will probably find Piedmont 150/350 series backs, and maybe a few Old Mill's, since the T210's are present. All of the T210's are from series 2,3, and 4, so I'm assuming it was done sometime around 1910.
I doubt there are any rare backs involved as most of the smokers I know prefer a particular brand and stick to it, so again probably 90% Piedmont with a chance at a few Old Mill's. But, a few Drum's would be a nice bonus..

Great point about smokers being loyal to one brand, but...many of these cards seem to have rounded corners. Makes me think backs may have more variety as they may actually be a collection put together back then.

I actually quoted the seller a price of $4,000-$7,000 for removal.I have a lot of experience with historical preservation and conservation. That price doesn't guarantee that any of the cards will be in sellable or gradeable condition either. After finding several dozen pieces just like this one over the years , my brother and I have found that it rarely pays to try and remove the cards when they are double or triple glued which is what this piece showed evidence of. Not too mention it appeared as though one type of adhesive that was used was organic in nature while the other type used probably wasn't. I'm in the process of removing over 40 cards from an scrapbook I bought over a week ago, and about 25% of the cards have been lost, including a T212 Weaver, and a T205 Mathewson.
i was surprised that the price went that high for the item, the seller thought he was going to make high 5 figures off of the sale, and was basing his valuation soley on the fact that there was a Ty Cobb card pasted to the board. Anyway, I hope the piece yields enjoyment for the buyer. Watch for a back damaged Ty Cobb Grren portrait to show up on Ebay in a few weeks if it is salvaged...LOL!!

150 cards works out to be almost $18 per card. Break it down to $250 for Cobb, $25 ea. for the other 7 HOFers, you still have roughly $16 for ea. common. It brought what its worth. I really dont see a break up value much more than that. With that said the yellow border (T210 Thebo) card is the key and the best thing on the piece, and might bring a few hundred if not more if it is not too bad of shape.

Over the years Ive always had good luck removing cards from Victorian Scrapbooks, so cant say from experience about how it would feel to lose a nice card. It would make me think twice about going too far.

90% of the cards I have dealt with were 1880 Victorian trade cards, N cards (N28, N2, N570), and 1888 Scrapps/R&S diecuts (Ive removed or cleaned up the backs of about 2 dozen of these diecuts alone). But Ive tried it with only about a dozen 1910 era cards.

I always love it when I find out the glue is just a flour and water paste.

I was watching that auction as soon as it was on. The seller told me that he would ship to Canada.. yet when i tried to bid it wouldn't let me oh well, it ended for more money than i was willing to pay for anyways. It would be crazy if there were a bunch of drum backs.
