Visited Harrisonburg, Va. today for my daughter to check out James Madison University. Found out that there was an antique mall nearby. With only 40 minutes before closing, I cruised through the store and found stacks and stacks of pinbacks in trays like you see pictured here.
Was able to rescue these two Orbit pins. This store is going to require another visit! Last edited by Vintagedeputy; 04-14-2023 at 04:35 PM. |

I couldn't find a scan of a Brooks Robinson but he is on the checklist of having a 3.5" B&W example of one of these 1969 MLB pins.

In 2014 Topps was searching for ways to market items directly to collectors. Started with set of " My Hero" 5x7 and 11x17 The cards were to be limited two ways first numbered to 99 and then only offered for 7 days. The 5x7 's were only sold as a set and cost $100 if I remember correctly with the 11x17's sold individually for about $49. Well being the first it did not go over well. But over time Topps used the leftover 5x7's as gifts at Industry conferences etc. Getting most of theb99 out in the market. Best guess is about 20 sets of 5x7 were sold that week and only a few each of the 11x17's. A couple years ago the 11x17's started showing up on Ebay through a wholesaler that looked like the bought a large group of extra stock of the 2014 My Hero and other issues from 2014. Not all players but most of the set was offered. For between $49 and $99 depending on player.
A few weeks later they offered a set of Buttons / Pins 11 Teams with each team limited to 75 sets. I think each set retailed for $20. So to buy a set you had to lay out $220. Again they did not sell well and over time they were discounted down to $10 then $5 and I think black friday the few left were $2.50. Someone bought a few Pirates and they have been up on Ebay for the last 9 years. But I dont think I have ever seen any other team sets never mind a complete set offered. Anyone else pick these up in 2014? Checklist: Each team had 5 players and a team pin. They were issued in a small white bag with a small tag listing the team inside As you can see they are identified as Topps Pins along the edge. Boston Red Sox Chicago Cubs Detroit Tigers Los Angeles Dodgers Minnesota Twins New York Mets New York Yankees Philadelphia Phillies Pittsburgh Pirates Oakland Athletics ST.Louis Cardinals Last edited by bigfanNY; 04-16-2023 at 07:15 PM. This is an interesting post! Do you know who the other players were for the other teams that you listed? I'm curious as to who they were for future reference... Thanks! |

Scott As I mentioned in previous post they were issued in a smal white bag. I have kept my set as issued so the checlist below was compiled by my 62 year old eyes looking at the pins pressed against the bag.
Boston : Bogaerts, Ortiz, Pedroia, Napoli, Cespedes Pirates : Cole, Martin, Alvarez, Marte, McCutchen St.Louis: Lynn, Carpenter, Molina, Wainwright, Holladay Phillies: Rollins, Lee, Howard, Utley, Hamels Tigers: Kinsler, Hunter, Cabrera, Verlander, Martinez Oakland : Moss, Norris, Grey, Reddick, Dinaldson Mets : Wheeler, Wright, Granderson, Harvey, Murphy Twins: Plouffe, Suzuki, Dozier, Mauer, Hughes Cubs: Castro, Lake, Jackson, Rizzo, Wood Dodgers: Kershaw, Puig , Ramirez , Gordon , Gonzalez Yankees See Pic... The Pins are very attractive and designs vary by team. There are some very serious pin collectors on this board as well as very serious Topps collectors so I hoped to see some replies from others who picked these up in 2014 Last edited by bigfanNY; 04-20-2023 at 10:08 AM. |

So is there a place for a Set of Pins issued in the Modern era? Not surprisingly there is some interest from those who focus on single players or No- hit Pitchers etc. But for the old school guys who walked the Earth with Checklist book in hand looking to complete their sets there is less. But this set clicks some key boxes for collectors. 1- Issued by Topps 2- decent number of star players 3- Very limited release. It also misses in a few key areas 1- Not a Card 2- not every team 3- They did not include a number of Star players and Rookies. So here we are coming up on a decade after release. With very limited sales in the secondary market. As I mentioned before I hoped to find a few like minded collectors that grabed these in 2014 and still hold them. But my guess is on a modern memorabilia board I might have more success. Since Scott mentioned The Verlander and The Tigers are one of the nicer sets ... J |

This group is a bit newer than what I usually go for, but it was an interesting grouping and fairly inexpensive so I picked it up. Some of them even had the year on the back, written on a sticker by the previous owner.

Been a little dry for me lately on finds in the wild as I’ve been moving, but I picked this up recently - 1972 Creative House Promotions, Dodgers pinback.
Funny thing is, I saw this same one in an antique store a few months ago. That one was heavily scratched and overpriced. I stumbled upon this one in an online auction and the price was very fair. |

I'm not a pin collector, per se.
However, I have a couple of pins that I wanted to display on a book shelf. I don't know if I invented this method, but I'm very happy with the results. I went to Home Depot and spent 65 cents on copper wire. It is both flexible and sturdy. I got home and cut it to size and then bent it into shape. See the fruits of my labor:

Here are four 3" no-hit pitcher pinbacks that I have recently added to my collection:
- Jim "Catfish" Hunter (A's PG 1968) - Rollie Fingers (A's combo no-hitter 1975) - Bo Belinsky (Angels 1st no-hitter 1962) NOTE: No Angels Belinsky pinback button exists - Fernando Valenzuela (Dodger phenom in the 1980's, Fernando pitched his no-hitter in 1990) Viva Fernando! So, what year did Satchel Paige play for the NY Black Yankees? LOL.
He pitched one game for them. If you’re going to make a fantasy piece, I’d think there are so many other teams to associate him with. Last edited by Vintagedeputy; 06-03-2023 at 10:20 AM. |

I just picked up a Giants 1982 stadium giveaway calendar. It was a year I was missing. One thing I liked was that they actually showed some decent pins in it. Usually, when the Marketing Dept. needs some "memorabilia", they just include whatever crap they can readily find.

Here is a recent pickup that will be incorporated into a framed project that is in progress.
This is a circa 1958 large PM10 pinback of HOF Warren Spahn. Definitely a toughee and I'm thrilled to add it to the collection. ![]() Last edited by Scott Garner; 07-08-2023 at 09:32 PM. |

It's a tough pin...as is the one with the little mitt. The theory is they stuck the mitt on and sold leftovers in 1959.

Great pin, Scott! Maybe with your stellar reputation and contacts, you didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for it. The rare PM-10's can be very pricey.
