I’ve always found the advertising on outfield walls to be quite appealing. Let’s see some Pre-War cards (and photos) which show this captivating scenery.

Here is some stylized outfield wall advertising as seen on the Earl Averill Diamond Stars artwork that was used to create the card. It always looked like "Burobas" to me, which is undoubtedly a made-up brand name.

And here we have the controversial T202. The high Right Field fence of League Park is in the backdrop (Cleveland Naps' stadium, circa 1911).
"Controversial", because the player pictured sliding into 3rd base is considered by many to be Joe Jackson. ![]() ![]() TED Z T206 Reference . |

A young Al Kaline heading to the Dugout at Yankees Stadium. Really great depth of quality for a consumer camera. Not sure the exact date, but I'm sure it's possible to tell with one of the signs.

As kids we thought this card was hilarious. I'm sure the boys at Topps thought so too.

I recently did a study of the evolution of the Ebbets Field scoreboard from 1938-1957.
I did an illustration of each season and the big and small changes that happened each season. You can read and see some of the illustrations on my website HERE. It is still a work in progress and I have updated some drawings with new info sent to me by old Dodger fans. Here are 3 different era examples of the scoreboard: Screen Shot 2023-03-17 at 10.07.05 AM.jpg |

My local park has a ton of advertisting on the outfield walls still.
Missoula Paddleheads (used to be Osprey which is much cooler). During the new naming process I suggested Smokejumpers, which is perfect, but they went with the idiotic Paddleheads...

Frank: Am pretty sure your photo of Dusty Rhodes was taken at Crosley Field. As for the white strip, it looks to be partially masking a billboard but no idea why.

Thank You, David.
Your experience, great memory, and that eye for detail have answered something I've wondered about for years. I saw a few games at Crosley Field. I have a 4' tall antique radio, with 3 bands (AM, and 2 world wide), that works, made by the Crosley Radio Co. I've listened to a few Cardinals ball game at night, just for the nostalgia of it. I probably saw 4 or 5 games there as a kid in the mid 60s. I remember the terrace in left field, and the deep center field. Thank You for educating me. |

1931 Giants spring training photo with lots of baseball experience and several outfield wall ads. Anyone know that era well enough to ID a company or two?

Great picture, nice to have the press listing about it.
Someone has correctly addressed the order in which they stand, Chief Bender on the far left, Tom Clark next to last on the right. Chief was 6' 2", Clark was 5' 11". The image of Chief was added to that photo, and it is slightly larger than it should be compared to the others; note the black penned in outline above his cap. The Baseball Reference bullpen bio says Clark was a coach for the Giants, 1932 - 1935, and in 1938. That printed matter indicates it's March of 1931... maybe 1931 was right, or it was 1932 and the paper had an error, or the BR bullpen article is wrong... or maybe in 1931 Clark helped with spring training but didn't stay as a coach during the regular season. BR last lists him as a minor league manager for Chambersburg in 1929. I don't recognize any of the billboard company names from what's in the pictures. A great photo for a New York Giants fan, or a John McGraw fan. For several years I've had a nebulous thought that all great baseball strategists can trace their roots back to John McGraw and Connie Mack. Pick a post WWII manager with some success, look at the managers he played under, look at them to see who they played under.... Easy, short example. Leo Durocher played for Frankie Frisch, who played for John McGraw. |
