Outfield Walls
 

I’ve always found the advertising on outfield walls to be quite appealing. Let’s see some Pre-War cards (and photos) which show this captivating scenery.

Here is some stylized outfield wall advertising as seen on the Earl Averill Diamond Stars artwork that was used to create the card. It always looked like "Burobas" to me, which is undoubtedly a made-up brand name.

The Auxiliary Scoreboard on the Right-Centerfield wall at Yankee Stadium.

The numbers tell the story of that famous day (Oct 8, 1956) when Don Larsen pitched his Perfect game.

The picture used on the 1956 Topps Clemente shows part of the outfield wall. I remember someone said it was from when he played right field, and they posted a picture of the entire wall, but I can't find the photo.

My 2 all-time favorites: Ebbets Field and the famous Schaefer Beer scoreboard, and Russwood Park, home of the Southern Association Memphis Chicks (Chickasaws) with it's iconic Memphis Steam Laundry smokestack, water tank, and scoreboard.

That is a wonderful photo. I can almost imagine the scene morphing into full color and the subjects beginning to move; an effect sometimes seen in movies which take a look back in time.

1908 was one hell of a season. Christy personally witnessed an amazing pennant race.

And here we have the controversial T202. The high Right Field fence of League Park is in the backdrop (Cleveland Naps' stadium, circa 1911).

"Controversial", because the player pictured sliding into 3rd base is considered by many to be Joe Jackson.

Not a lot of Fats Fothergill cards out there. He died very young in the late thirties. The Jack Hallet took the longest to find. These are Wheaties postcards.

Looks like an early 20s pinstripe uniform, pre-Yankee Stadium, so it must be the Polo Grounds. Could it be Hotel Congress, now named the Congress Hotel? There is also a Concorde Hotel, but it used to be named the Fitzpatrick, so I don't think that is it. I don't know when advertising stopped on the Polo Grounds walls, but I have a 1938 Giants team photo, and there was wall advertising then.

This Whitey looks spectacular.

Love the Russwood Park photo with the big Water Tank. And the Toddle House Sign, which hearkens back to my earliest memories of eating out. Just a bar with 10 stools, and no booths. Hard to believe they could turn a profit.

Trivia... Who knows which restaurant chain still sells Toddle House Omelettes?
Hint..... Their founder worked at Toddle House as a short order cook.

The Rogers Peet of Ruth features the same image, but as a black and white photo, and has a little more of the advertising sign visible. Unfortunately a little blurry.

NY Highlander third baseman....

I recently did a study of the evolution of the Ebbets Field scoreboard from 1938-1957.

I did an illustration of each season and the big and small changes that happened each season.

My local park has a ton of advertisting on the outfield walls still.

Missoula Paddleheads (used to be Osprey which is much cooler). During the new naming process I suggested Smokejumpers, which is perfect, but they went with the idiotic Paddleheads...

Dusty Rhodes. This is a PMT, a photo mechanical transfer. It's the basis for the image on card #1 of the 1955 Topps. Rhodes nudged out Ted Williams (card #2) for card #1 honors. Dusty has just gotten his 1954 World Series MVP honors... he went 4 for 6, 2 HR, 7 RBIs. He pinch hit and stayed in to play for the first 3 games. Giants manager Durocher didn't need him for game 4. The Giants defeated the Cleveland Indians, 4 games to none.

Rhodes had played in the Kitty League for the Hopkinsville Hoppers in 1947; and that is most likely how he and my grandfather would have met. Daddy Wake, as I knew him, just barely, was an old, tall, white headed, slender fellow, in his 80s, when I first recall having seen him. Back in the 30's and 40's he lived in and near Hopkinsville, Kentucky. On his dresser in his bedroom was this photo, in a metal picture frame. The only team that I new of in New York would have been the New York Yankees. I knew the Giants were in San Francisco, but had no idea they'd ever been anywhere else. Anyway, this photo was an enigma to me as a young kid.

Years later I wrote him, sending him several reworked prints of this 8"x10", without his endorsement and signature, and an SASE. I asked that he sign 2 and send them back to me (one for me and one for my cousin). He signed 2, kept the rest, and we corresponded a bit.
In that image, he's wearing a road uniform. So where is he? Ebbett's Field, which would have been close to his home park. It's certainly not the Polo Grounds. I think it's in Cleveland Stadium, pointed out toward center field, close in time to when game 3 or game 4 of that 1954 World Series. The outfield billboards aren't clear. I've always wondered what that white patch beside his right shoulder was about. Where do you guys think those outfield are located?

Frank: Am pretty sure your photo of Dusty Rhodes was taken at Crosley Field. As for the white strip, it looks to be partially masking a billboard but no idea why.

Huntington Avenue Grounds (Boston A.L. park before Fenway) had signs on walls inside and outside the park.

Your experience, great memory, and that eye for detail have answered something I've wondered about for years. I saw a few games at Crosley Field. I have a 4' tall antique radio, with 3 bands (AM, and 2 world wide), that works, made by the Crosley Radio Co. I've listened to a few Cardinals ball game at night, just for the nostalgia of it. I probably saw 4 or 5 games there as a kid in the mid 60s. I remember the terrace in left field, and the deep center field.
