Thanks, Mark!! Agreed 100%. As soon as I saw it, I thought the painting would just do itself. What an image.

Agree... just raw emotion. I am sure you could come up with quite the "quirkily, dramatic title".

Graig, That photo is a beaut for sure, and will look even better rendered in Kreindlercolor some day!
On a completely unrelated note, I picked up a cheap used copy of Okkonen's Baseball Memories 1930-1939 on Amazon for the reference library, and found an inscription inside that looked familiar. I didn't even have to look him up though, because when I flipped to the page with the bookmark, there he was. I can only assume the bookmark was drawn by his grandson or something? Not terribly valuable, but a pleasant surprise upon arrival (especially since the book itself cost me a whopping $0.34 plus $3.99 s/h). |

Here are some of my pickups from this past weekend at a flea market. The first item I picked up is a nice 1880-1890s reach ring bat and the second item is a 1990-91 Houston Astros team signed ball...ball includes schilling, Biggio, Bagwell, Ken Caminiti,Darryl Kile.

Awesome photo, Joe. Williams' swing is classic from any angle, but having McCarthy breathing down his neck makes it for me.

Finally
So after searching for quite a while for not ridiculously priced copy, I finally found one. Not the best condition, but I'm happy with the price and it presents pretty well in person.
I already have it framed and ready to hang. Will be posting pics soon of the newly framed stuff in my newly completed man cave.

Are you going to post your man cave pictures here or on the autograph side? |

Thanks Mike. Now I can stop pestering you to trade me yours! Unless of course you really want to!
I'll probably post them in this forum. There is enough of both signed and unsigned to be here.

Thank you for the comments. Finally decided to take some items out of albums and the safe deposit box to display. I'm fortunate to have a local commercial framing house that will take retail walk-ins and the price is really good, it just may take a little longer to get your material back.

Graig that's a beautiful Gomez photo. It's very moving. It seems hard to find such evocative photos but very gratifying when you do. I have always been interested in Vic Power (Pellot). He wore his emotions on his sleeve and spoke his mind freely. I have been looking for a photo of him for my collection that best depicts these complexities. I picked this one up tonight and love his subtle forlorn expression which is explained on the slug. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Pellot Last edited by 71buc; 04-14-2013 at 11:22 PM. |

Mike,
You sure got that right - Power always seemed to exude something. Your photo is certainly a primo example. Sometimes, I can forget how much George Weiss may have been a bigot. The fact that it took them until '55 to bring up Ellie is evidence enough. I still remember hearing a writer (I think it was Donald Honing) stating that when asked about Howard, Weiss replied, "he's a good ballplayer and he's a gentleman." The writer then asks his audience, "since when did you have to be a gentleman to play in the majors?" Though subtle, it's still there. I suppose that the Yankees could have had many of the stars that were in the Negro Leagues during the initial integration of the NL, including the likes of Mays and Aaron. It's not like Yankee scouts had no idea who they were. And, their reluctance to consider Power is another example of that, especially considering how much he was tearing up their farm system in the early 1950s. Baseball is a strange and worrying thing. Graig

1912 Boston New York World Series Promo Ticket
I am not exactly sure what this is, looks to be some promo for a saloon in Philadelphia, not sure if they gathered there to watch one of those mechanical baseball displays and get the Series "broadcast/wired" to them like was shown in Eight Men Out and seen in pictures people watching re-creations in the streets.
Any additional info would be much appreciated. |
