I recently stepped way out of my realm of knowledge (and comfort zone) to purchase a press photo of Joe Dimaggio which I matched to a Detroit Free Press newspaper article from June 30 1941 entitled "Dimaggio sets hitting mark" (a link to the newspaper on Ebay is below). I'm not too worried about value but being that I am new new to press photos, I was wondering if this picture was only used for this article or if it was probably used in others. Also, I was to curious as to whether this is the only copy of this press photo, or if there are others. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated; thanks!

Offhand, I'm not sure. My gut is saying that it could be a head shot taken earlier that was pulled out of the file to run with the hit streak story, but I don't know that for sure.

I did do a quick google image search and turned up this website:

that uses the same article and credits the source as the National Baseball Library Hall of Fame Cooperstown, NY (though that probably just means that the photo they used came from the Hall's photo archives).

If I find anything else, I'll let you know.

Definitely an earlier shot. Judging from the background of trees and such, I would imagine it's from spring training of some year. And, by the darkness and thickness of Yankee pinstripes, most likely earlier than 1940...

Either way, ya can't go wrong with a young Joe D!!

And of course, I found the image used for the DP on Corbis, and they list a '41 date. This is where Eddie Murphy emphatically yells, "in dee face!"

...but at least I think I was right with the spring training bit.

Thanks for the input, it's greatly appreciated! From what i have gathered so far, it seems like i have a lot more research to do. To be honest, i'm having a lot of fun with this!
