The 1914 Mathewson was an ugly image and looks drawn by a kid (holding the ball well past release point). Im sure they replaced it in the 1915 set with that attractive portrait because of this.
Ive always thought all 1914s were printed in the same numbers, and the only reason the Mathewson and Chance have a premium is because they are different or not included in the far more common 1915 set. Same thing for the Chase card that replaced the Chance, except since it is a 1915 only card it is far more common than a 1914 exclusive card like the Mathewson (uglypose) and Chance. try to find any specific player in 1914, they are always far far scarcer than the 1915s |
