For the purposes of full disclosure, I'm a white guy but this is something I have often noticed and asked myself over the years.

He likes reaction, either one way or another. Good or bad.
FoxSports knew what they were getting when they paid him 800k per year. |

Its unfortunate but if a white guy said this, he would be fired on the spot!! It's such a double standard.
Something wrong with this pic if he's pulling in 800k! |

It kind makes Tony Kornheuiser's Sausage in a Skin comment seem pedestrian.

I understand what you're trying to say but I don't see anything unfortunate about it. For nearly the first 50 years of the last century baseball kept black players out of their major leagues and racism ran rampant not only in the sports pages, but also on the fields themselves. These were write sportswriters and white players. While I agree that if something is wrong for one person to say it should be wrong for another, I do not think anyone is unfortunate for being born a white male in this country and I don't think anything is lost in not being able to make racist comments. So if this guy he commented about was white would this thread even be here? Society is to over sensitive to stuff. If your not happy then F- the majority and give favor to the minority. I had a conversation with a few of my cousins (yes blood related) severals yrs back about comments made to me and some friends we were with. I asked Lee if the fact that I was related to him if it made it ok to say the word "Nigga" to him and others since he did and has called me that several times. He looked kinda stunned and answered NO!! How stunning it was to me. Its ok for another race to make racial slurs all the time and publicly at that, but if anyone else says it of another race its an issue. So how about "PRACTICING WHAT YOU PREACH" or Shut the Flip up for craps sake.

However we go with this thread, and how we may disagree with other's opinions, jason whitlock is a supersized piece of garbage. I have heard him many times moan and groan about comments made towards african american athletes, mainly tiger woods in his hay day. What a hypocrite. But it's ok for him to make this kind of bullsh** remark? I don't think so. However much it hurts, the one post was right in what was said. If this had been a white sportswriter making these comments towards an african american athlete, his ass would have been grass....

I actually don't think what Mayweather said was that bad since on a similar note, I think that much of the publicity is because Lin is playing in New York. If this were in Cleveland, this news would barely make the radar, IMHO. I think as teams start "game planning" for Lin, his productivity may go down, but I'm hoping for the best.

Mayweather's quote is just as ignorant but not nearly as offensive. Basketball is a sport with predominantly African American players and until now, no Asian American players. Does he really not understand why Lin is a news story? Perhaps he really is that dense. But looking at the comments he's made about Pacman in the past, he's probably also a bigot. It's strange to me that two men whose fathers were likely excluded from so many opportunities just a generation ago would be so ignorant today.

I stopped listening to East Coast SPN long ago...since they don't acknowledge existence of anything out here west of the Missisippi (except for the Lakers)...juvenile incidents like this only adds to my disdain for that channel.

To me this is just like the steroid argument. Steroids are a form of cheating but who is it hurting? My answer is the kids who are growing up watching these men slowly kill themselves with drugs. The kids do not have the maturity or impulse control or reasoning skills to realize this and they try different things that can be VERY harmful to them to try to get an edge.
Same thing with this kind of hate speech. It is nothing more than that. The statistics on the "harmless" jokes are staggering. I urge people to visit websites like "Teaching Tolerance" and the Southern Poverty Law Center if you want to see some of the stats on how harmful this kind of speech is. I personally had an example of this just this week and have been dying to get here to post it...I have students come into my class (4th grade) and repeat the dumb and disgusting all the time. Friday, a student in my class who idolizes Kobe Bryant said to me he "can't wait for Kobe to play the Knicks and drop the bomb on Lin!" I asked him what he meant...he told me just like the A-bomb on Hiroshima. I told him that Lin was from Taiwan and not Japan and that his comment was out of line. Thousands of people died that day and it is not a joke. He just could not understand, being 10 years old, that what he said was bad. When I asked him where he heard that joke, he said his older brother heard it from his father. I emailed the father and he emailed back saying it was harmless. I then asked him if it would have been harmless had the japanese girl in my class said that "Lin was going to enslave Kobe next time they met on the court." That drove the point home. The family I spoke to was black. They immediately apologized and were horrified when I turned it around. They also assured me that they would be more mindful about what they say in front of the kids. People need to understand they are not alone in this world and often there are young ears either watching the channels, reading the web, or just looking over your shoulders. These comments are neither harmless nor appropriate at any time. Joshua |
