if what i am reading is correct, he thinks it is 10%, not 1 %
I've been thinking that either there is some serious confusion about what's going on here, or Ralph's posts have been more in a joking manner to poke some fun at whoever's throwing out the severely low-ball offers. I haven't made up my mind on which one's going on though...

I believe we have all three; confusion, joking, and bad math.

I didn't see any post where the card was offered for sale, or anywhere that he asked for offers. He just asked for opinions on if the card was worth $20 or not.

I pm'd him and told him I personally would only go $30 if it wasn't trimmed...he responded to my pm with the whole 1% of near mint value thing, to which I replied with an explanation which included 2011 SCD valuation and the fact that I like the card, but don't need it for my collection. I also wrote I expected he could get more than $30 and if it were mine, I'd offer it at $100 (depending on what I paid originally) and not be surprised if I had to go as low as $50.

Then I read his post about the $19 Gehrig.....................

I probably wouldn't even pay $30 for it now, but I am curious what Chris thought it is worth. The only other value opinion I see in this thread is from Vintagetoppsguy and I certainly understand the thought process there.

I get that Tony. He could clearly get more than $20 for the Mays. The Gehrig though. $19? Just seems ridiculous. I obviously haven't seen it yet though. The whole 1-5 or 10% thing makes perfect sense for complete and total beaters, BUT there are certain cards that the general rules don't apply to. The Gehrig is definitely one of those cards. Even in worst possible condition. I think that card doesn't drop below 15-20% NM value..

I agree.....

My personal starting point is : 1/2 of 2011 SCD VG value, then depending on several factors including condition and "does it fit my collecting focus?" I adjust from there. Usually equates to a low grade card, but I am fine with that.

For an iconic card like the Gehrig, I don't expect to ever see it offered at my personal starting point (unless it is truly in very poor condition).

53 topps Mays, wouldn't surprise me at all to see it offered at my starting point!

Tony

Ralph,

If you TRULY believe that the Mays and Gehrig are only worth $39 combined, then I will give you 3X that ($117).

Is this card actually for sale (1953 topps Mays)? If so what is the real price?
