Posted on here a while ago.
"Here is the story as it was told to me many years ago. In 1941, the daughter of F. Scott Fitzgerald sold all of his personal belongings at auction in Baltimore. Included in the sale was his boyhood baseball card collection consisting of over a thousand cards. The baseball cards were sold as one lot and the winning bidder was Harold Shigley. Not only did he win the cards, he was also high bidder on his jewelry, typewriters, some of his furniture and many other items. As a child, Fitzgerald had stamped every card on the back with that black "F". In the 1960s, Shigley traded away the Fitzgerald cards due to their mostly poor condition. I contacted his grandson a while back and he said the only one he kept was a T206 Jack Knight. Obviously, they have made their way into many different collections since then." Not my cards. ![]() ![]()

Here's a scan of an "FS" stamped card that I sold several years ago:
![]() I also sold one of the F. Scott Fitzgeralds about a year ago on the BST. |

Erick,
I think the one you're talking about is the one you sold to me. It's a Bill Latimore SGC10. I consider it one of the true treasures of my collection. I loved the man's work and to own something once owned by him makes it priceless to me. Thanks again. Last edited by powderfinger; 01-26-2012 at 05:34 PM. Reason: correct spelling |

I'd like to take a closer look at one of those cards and possibly compare notes. Is there another way to contact who ever maintains that site? Thanks, |

Back in the day this was considered less desirable because of the stamp... which is the only reason I ended up with it.
I guess there was EPDG smoker in the family...where was Mr. F. raised? Brian |

Well, for whatever reason he hasn't returned my email and I haven't seen any recent posts, so maybe he's on vacation.
It's not clear, from his site, whether he has the cards pictured in his gallery or if they were just submitted by other collectors, so let me ask the board this. Does anybody own the "Backwards D" card shown on his site? I'm fairly certain that was stamped by my grandmother and I would like to own it. It's only because it's well known that I am looking for FD stamped backs that I'm hesitant to post a scan, since I'm afraid it might be possible for someone to recreate them and try to sell them to me. I trust the members of this board, but who knows who is lurking, so I'll take a chance and ask what you guys think. A couple of my grandma's cards only had a D, like below. Does this look like the same stamp?? I've magnified the card from the site as much as possible and given the possible scan variations, I think it's the same. Opinions? If you own this card, do you know where it came from - region of the country, etc, and would you be willing to part with it? If nothing else, at least a mystery is possibly solved. Thanks. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, but his father's work took him to Buffalo, NY for the first 10 years of his life. When his father lost his job in Buffalo, the family moved back to Minnesota. Scott stayed there until he left for college. Since he was born in 1896, his T206s were collected and stamped when he was a teenager in St. Paul.

I'm really discouraged by the lack of response, I thought collectors genuinely cared about such things.
At least I got to take my futility out for a little exercise. ![]() |

T206'ers out there to get a little snippet of insight into possible brand distribution, because the small sampling of these 'F' stamps I have seen often have the El Principe De Gales back, which of course is not one of the more commonly found T206 backs. Sorry Tsaiko about the lack of response...I certainly have no real knowledge of the back stamps, and I think you may have hit a sub-genre T206 topic that still remains a murky mystery. I realize that my collection is not a master set or owned by a master collector, but I would still like to know if the person who owns that "D" card is known and if he could be steered in my direction to possibly make a comment. |
