It's the only one I own, but one of my favorite cards. I remeber seeing old photos of his follow through and the card captures it perfectly.

I also took the plunge into the 33G set, started about a year ago... Im low grade all the way ( G F P ), I also need a ton of commons( apporx 100+), I actually find the stars/HOFers more readlly avail. then many commons. The lesser name HOFers ( Ripely,Manush,Ferrell,Cronin) can be had for under 40, the name HOFers ( Hornsby,Hubbell,Ott,Foxx,etc)..always seem to be in the 50-75 range. and the big two ( Ruth/Gehrig)..well..I dont worry about those yet...if I get that far..I could live with a reprint in that spot for a while.
PS - if anyone has any extra avail for trade, let me know...I have a handful incl HOFers, and a load of other 30s cards incld HOFers..all lower grade Ralph |

Here are 3 of my favorites from my favorite set of all time. I also love the #92 Gehrig but I don't have that one. The #92 is a darker blue than the #160. I became a fan of this Goose Goslin card after listening to The Glory of Their Times CD.
Jim Sorry for the odd sized scans. |

Hey Ralph! As David mentioned I am close to completing the set (15 cards away), however that does include Lajoie, 4 Ruths, 1 Gehrig, Dean and some other HOFers.
My set falls between SGC 50-SGC 80. I have been upgrading some of my remaining SGC40s when I can. I feel that is the range that is the most presentable, yet least expensive. I try to get them pre-graded, Joe's Vintage has been a good source for me. To be honest I really haven't come across any surprises. For some reason it took me forever to acquire a Tommy Thevenow (#36) but mainly because I didn't wanna go out of my fixed price range, and that card always seemed to creep right out of my range. You can see my collection here: http://imageevent.com/vanslykefan/pr...0&m=24&w=0&p=0 Let me know if you have any questions, it's an awesome set and a lot of fun to collect. Rob

Guys, Thanks for all the info and help. All the cards look AWESOME. These are truly some of the most beatiful cards. I think SGC 50 maybe the way to go, cards really pop with the black inserts. Althought all the grades looked great, I may well end up with the Big Boys in SGC 30, till money permits... I know this is a rookie question, but what is the difference with the ones without, the BIG LEAGUE CHEWING GUM in red banner? Were they produced later in the design run or is it just to be different.... Thanks again, look forward to seeing some more, and showing some off soon!!! Ralph

Ralph - the 1933 Goudey set is one of the greatest. Have fun putting it together!
In case you are interested in assembling a master set, there are two variations that I know of: #6 Jimmy Dykes - there are two versions, one that lists his age as 26 and one that list his age as 36; and #47 Heinie Manush - there are two versions, one with a fence in the background and one without. Does anyone know of any other variations? |
