That's just way too much work. The marks were most likely just at certain places on the sheet, but on every sheet. That way the cutter could simply take a random size stack of sheets and cut them. The extra time to place a special sheet atop a stack would slow things down too much.

The question is exactly where they were on the sheets. Almost certainly at each corner. It's possible there were marks other places too, commonly in the middle of a side, less commonly in the middle of the sheet.

Steve is right about the plate....too much work......i think they were on all 4 corners of every sheet.....

Maybe so. I was thinking that they would use them to set the jig that holds the cards in the right place. Then they could cut a bunch until they saw the jig was moving and reset it. Another question. Were the printing plates made of limestone?
