No specific order, obviously rookies seem to be most important to me...Sorry, 13 was about as low as I could go with this list...
1982 Topps Traded Ripken 1963 Topps Pete Rose 1954 Topps Henry Aaron 1951 Bowman Willie Mays 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle 1949 Leaf Satchel Paige 1949 Leaf Jackie Robinson 1957 Topps Brooks Robinson 1958 Topps Roger Maris 1948 Bowman Stan Musial 1952 Topps Eddie Matthews 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente 1968 Topps Ryan/Koosman The only cards on this list that I have are the Ripken, Brooks and Maris..If I wasn't so rookie minded, I'd probably also add the '54 bowman Ted Williams(which I also have). I wonder why most (not all) responses to this seem to answer a different question, i.e., "What are your top-10 postwar players?" As far as cards themselves are concerned, why not consider scarcity as one of the prime requirements - for example, 1951 Topps MLAS Roberts, anyone?

I chose cards that were my favorite just because they were players that I watched when I was a kid. None of them were difficult to find. Sounds like we need another thread: What are your top-10 toughest or most satisfying post war cards?

Agree with Dan....top 10 you have ? top 10 on your list ? top 10 in value ? Top 10 in scarcity ? Top 10 in hobby significance ? Any could be an interesting list(s)

I guess I should have put "What are your top 10 favorite postwar cards?" to be more specific, but since you can use whatever criteria you like to pick them it's still a pretty open ended question.

I guess its hard for me to separate the rarity/scarcity/grade factor our from the list, but here they are, at least for the moment:
1. 1947 Tip Top Warren Spahn 2. 1947 Tip Top Yogi Berra 3. 1953-55 Dormand Mantle, with bat on shoulder (beautiful card, raw Near Mint!) 4. 1954 Bowman Mickey Mantle (PSA 8) 5. 1954 Topps Aaron (PSA 7) 6. 1954 Johnston's Cookies Aaron 7. 1955 Exhibit Postcard Back Mickey Mantle (with "Made in USA" legend at lower right, indicating a reissue in '55, from an earlier 1951-53 print date, and depicting him in his 1951 rookie season) 8. 1955 Harmon Killebrew (PSA 8) 9. 1956 Kahn's Frank Robinson 10. 1962 Roger Maris (PSA 8) Honorable mention: 11. 1969 Topps Super Proof Reggie Jackson (PSA Authentic, due to square corners, but otherwise Near Mint) 12. 1959 Topps Harmon Killebrew (took me quite a while to find a nice PSA 8) 13. 1961 Maris (PSA 8) 14. 1968 Nolan Ryan 15. 1985 Topps Mark McGwire (sorry, but I just loved to watch him in his prime, and am finding it hard to hold a grudge as time goes by, in light of the fact that what he did simply reflected the culture of the game at the time. Like a little kid, I used to sometimes carry his card around with me, and still have the one that was my near constant companion in 1998. His swing was just so sweet, compact and powerful! I also made a killing by selling 12-15 high-grade examples at the '98 National, which I'd been accumulating since 1992, so it doesn't hurt that he put some money in my pocket!) Good thread, and some very interesting posts! Larry Last edited by ls7plus; 08-13-2011 at 02:09 PM. |

I choose these for the beautiful depictions of my favorite baseball stars (also as cards in my collection):
1957 Topps Mickey Mantle; to me, this is the greatest baseball card ever. 1950 Bowman Jackie Robinson 1949 Bowman Satchel Paige 1953 Topps Willie Mays; the basket catch displayed. 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle; great catch! I love cards showing the glove. 1956 Topps Roberto Clemente; great colors and another great catch! 1956 Topps Sandy Koufax 1957 Topps Henry Aaron; although an error that Topps didn't bother correcting, I love the idea of Hank batting lefty. 1962 Topps Roger Maris 1965 Topps Carl Yastrzemski; Yaz with the glove. |

Not the most important hobby cards but....
1972 Roberto Clemente - Does he see his future in that ball? 1950 Bowman Jackie Robinson - Classic!!!! 1953 Bowman Color Pee Wee Reese - Great Pose 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle - The best CF in NY - discuss... 1951 Bowman Ted Williams - The art on the card matches the art of the swing! 1952 Berk Ross Bob Feller - With his speed how many takes to get this shot? 1980 Topps Reggie Jackson - The swing in the uniform I remember him in (Not much changed from 1974 Topps either)! 1952 Bowman Stan Musial - How do you get from that stance into the hitting zone? 1989 Upper deck Nolan Ryan (Astros Multi-exposure) - My only guess as to what his delivery looked like to a batter! 1982 Topps Rickey Henderson - "Try and stop me!"
