Its interesting that some don't think the high end of card collectors can grow and that when the current group passes away that noone will be there to take their place? Among people I work with, I have played a role in getting two collectors in the hobby-one is now collecting high end graded sets and stars from the 1950s and the other is focused on high grade hockey and baseball from the 50s and 60s. I have also fielded many questions from prospective collectors asking about how to build a vintage high grade collection.

Good luck to all and what you choose to collect.

Jim
Maybe someone will be their to take their place, I honestly don't know. But on the other side of that, we have to take into consideration that guys like Bruce plan on donating portions of their collections to museums when they pass. Not that there's anything wrong with that, in fact I kind of admire it. Now, assuming that a few of the other top dollar collectors have similar plans, it automatically reduces the amount of desirable high end material available to any potential up and coming big spender, which could discourage them from collecting, or at the very least joining the ranks of the serious big spenders.. Maybe one of those donated cards could've been the spark that some rich dude needed to get into collecting, or to make the jump from casual to serious collector? Maybe he saw it, and decide he had to have it, and then fell in love with the hobby? What happens when that potential card or set or whatever isn't there to be had?

The thought of the "Just So" cards sitting in a museum pains me. It doesn't anger me one bit, but it definitely pains me...

Jim- congrats on losing the 65 pounds. That's a big deal. And I read all your music posts, even though you generally don't get any written responses.

What appears to go wrong on all of Bruce's posts is not the content, although I don't feel that most of the board members really want to analyze the financial end of this hobby. It's instead the condescending tone.

Instead of ingratiating himself with board members, he antagonizes them. I know he may disagree with that but that's my take. Then it just becomes a free-for-all. Posters start ragging on him, he rags back, and often all hell breaks loose. This has happened far too many times on Bruce's threads not to notice the pattern.

it's a shame too. This could have been an excellent thread. I actually really enjoyed the analysis portion of his post. I do disagree with the total number of collectors, however. Has to be smaller than what he said.

Barry agree 100%

However in this case folks like Seth came out swinging first and the shot about kicking the bucket was a bit much IMO.

If Bruce is really sick kind of not cool.

Cheers,

John

Bruce has had health issues but I believe he is doing better now. And I agree Seth's comment was not appropriate. My point is that this is a pattern that repeats itself in many of Bruce's threads. And it's not by coincidence.

Kind of hypocritical to complain about it when he wished to read my obituary a couple of years back...the only reason I gave him a "yes" vote was sympathy for him...I don't know how ill he is/was, but it sounded like he had some major issues and I thought perhaps Net54 would be good therapy, but he just can't seem to shake the elitist attitude that initiates the flame wars. And for a guy who loves to talk about the empires and collection that he's built you'd think he could spring for a scanner or digital camera and show us something once in a while instead of constantly reminding us how "elite" it is.

Dan totally agree Bruce can be a rough individual to deal with, he comes off way over the top. Bruce has also said some pretty amazing stuff that are serious WTF moments. Heck I also got threatened to be sued back in the day too. LOL

I hear you about hypocrisy Dan but let’s also talk about naivety for a moment.

You guys Leon and you both gave Bruce the boot awhile back for these very things you and others here complain about. Yet Bruce has been Bruce and will always be Bruce but you let him come back Dan.

Then you act all shocked or ticked off that he’s back in the mix with elitist comments and social economic baseball card speculative whale watching threads.

This train wreck as well as any others here that are sure to come from Bruce is as much on the mods hands as any members.

Let’s face it you know these guys are going to take shots at Bruce and you know Bruce is going to shoot back and as Barry says….here we go again….

Just my two cents here; I get my chops busted when I have disagreements with board members who are willingly messing with known hobby information and passing on bogus hobby information to our members all of which is on topic BTW and get told to play nice.

However letting a guy back in who both of you darn well know has history of having knock down drag outs that have very little to do with the original post well is exactly what you mentioned hypocritical.

Dan the only thing that is more hypocritical than Bruce crying foul over nasty comments Dan, is moderators who let him back in at some point rolling into a thread after letting him back knowing who Bruce is and saying “come on guys back on topic, and play nice.”

On a plus side his threads do get some view counts and posts….al of which is why Bruce lights everyone’s fires and pushes everyone’s buttons IMO.

Cheers,

John

As someone who watched his father die from cancer call me a softy for someone who I thought was very ill and could benefit from participating in Net54...if that makes me a hypocrite so be it.

Let's all be friends and make nice,Bruce can mingle with his own species. This will be difficult since Howard Hughes, Leona Helmsley and Aristotle Onassis are dead but I'm sure he has lots of other friends than us peasant lower 90% collectors.

Default double talk

We find it remarkable that so many who don't care about what we say care to comment.

Even more remarkable are those who want to legislate their own rules. We responded to a comment about death- and responded to a question very few of you would have the guts to answer honestly.

John's sarcastic comments and cartoons are accepted as fair play, but if one does not agree with John or appears to be elitist then it presents a problem.
Tell us John, are you, in fact, not the owner of a substantial collection, what kind of car do you drive, and do you give more than 20% of your income to the poor? We think not

The Board is a great source for information, but to deny the hobby is still a business, and there is rarely an article, a trade magazine and certainly auction that does focus on value.

We have as much right to our elitist views as you do to be a liberal Democrat, a conservative Republican, a Red Sox fan, a Rockies fan, a born again Christian, a Muslim a Jew or a transvestite.

Whilst we greatly appreciate the overwhelming support that we have received on the Board and privately, we do wonder why some pretty advanced collectors fear controversy and change.

Remember the famous quote " I am all for progress, it is just that I am against."

We are for change and discussion. That is only way we learn from one another.
