I bought my "realistic" version in or around 1998. I was living in New Jersey at the time, and it was listed on eBay. It looked legit, and after e-mailing the seller I called him to ask a few questions. During our conversation, he mentioned that he was about 2 hours from me and that I was welcome to come to his store to check out the doll.
I just assumed his store was a card or antiques shop. The next day I drove the 90 miles and was surprised to find his business to be a combination surplus/junk/used-auto-parts/second-hand store. I was convinced I was at the wrong place. I walked in, told the person behind the counter why I was there and watched him turn around and pull the nodder off a dusty, glass shelf, where it was sitting between a Vick's vaporizer and a stack of VHS tapes.
After inspecting it and preparing to leave, I mentioned to him that the doll was most likely going to sell for more than $1,000. I jokingly said something like, "Can I count on you to take good care of it until I buy it?"
He was not amused, I'm guessing because he thought I was full of crap about what I thought it would sell for.
When I returned five days later, he looked at me like I had two heads, probably trying to figure out what kind of moron would pay $1,500 for a bobbin' head.
