Ted - I have a question. You wrote, "1883 .... Opening Day at Chicago's new Lake Front Park stadium," but it looks like the date at the top of the page is 1877. Am I reading that right?

If you are referring to the number in the uppermost right corner, it is .... #1377.
This picture is that of Opening Day 1883. The White Stockings played at this ballpark from 1878 to 1884. Regards, TED Z |

I have a complete Harper's with the Ewing cover, but have never seen it colorized like that. Is that original? Can anyone give some insight on the colorized versions. Thanks much.

I'll work on getting some scans here soon. But I have according to the VCBC checklist.
10/15/59 - 664/665 - 1 - A BB Match at The Elysian Fields, Hoboken 05/16/68 - cover - 7 - George Sands - cover**full issue 07/03/69 - 421 - 8 - Picked Nine of Red Stocking Club 05/14/81 - 320 - 17 - Princeton College BB Nine 08/05/82 - 493 - 18 - The Metropolitan Nine (1/2 page) 10/13/83 - 653 - 23/24 - BB Champions of 1883 / Boston BBC 05/31/02 - <11> - International Champions - Boston Champions (reprint of 6/27/1874) Plus the 1883 Spalding Guide Woodcut of Dan Brouthers that I picked up in the BST from Phil. and a woodcut from "The Graphic" August 15th 1874 from the UK. "Visit of the American Base-Ball Player to England-Their first game at Liverpool". I have the full issues of a few, and at least the full page for all of them except the Metropolitan nine. All uncolored. Since I've started collecting these things, they've quickly become my favorite items in my collection. Which is surprising, considering how cheaply they can be gotten. It's especially nice to be able to read the corresponding articles. Last edited by novakjr; 05-14-2011 at 12:35 PM. |

The Harper's Woodcuts were issued strictly in black and white, but their owners sometimes hand colored or tinted them later on.

This is a page from the July 25, 1874 Harpers Weekly with the members of the Philadelphia Athletics. A.C. Anson is pictured bottom right.
