Yeah, there is, but you have to handle the cards to see the differences: (1) some cards weren't issued before, and (2) the reissued cards had different cropping, teams and/or borders. In fact those dummies at PSA got it wrong on one of the most important cards of all, the 1923-24 Babe Ruth. This one for sale in Legendary is a 1921, not a 1923-24 as PSA slabbed it:
![]() The Ruth was borderless in 1921 and has a border in 1923-24. ![]() The 1st thing to do is figure whether you have a card that was not issued at all in 1921-22. Like these: ![]() ![]() ![]() If the guy was in the 1921 set, more than likely ESCO took the old picture and played with it, like the Ruth. Or this Veach: 1921 ![]() 1923 ![]() Also note the "AL" use in 1923 instead of the "Am.L" in 1921

Adam... Thank you for all the great information about exhibit cards....
I am fascinated by the color variations in this set. Here are my Grove cards. I still need a few more of the different colors. Even within the colors (like blue), there are different shades.

The back of these cards can also be oriented in different directions. Check out the cards below. In the top card, the red dot (for the top, right corner of the card front) corresponds to the top right corner of the back of the card. For the card on the bottom, the yellow dot (for the top, right corner of the card front) corresponds to the bottom left corner of the back of the card. I find this sort of stuff fascinating. I emailed Adam about this a couple years ago and he was not surprised at all by this.
BTW, in person, these cards are both the same shade of green. Yet, the scans make them look so different. The card on the bottom is in a slab and the card on the top (from a trade with Adam a few years ago) is raw. The slab alters the way my scanner views the color of the card. Note that the printing on the back of the cards come in different colors as well (Green vs Brown in this case).

Adam,
Thanks for the response and all the great scans! I'd never noticed the AM.L. vs A.L. difference before. It's odd that they didn't use something other than N.L. in 1921 also (like Natl. L.). So, telling which year the NL cards are from requires a lot of knowledge. Brad, I love those Lefty Grove cards! He's one of my favorites, no matter what color. - Dave Last edited by DaveW; 02-25-2011 at 01:38 PM. |
