Thanks for posting those pics, Tom. I thought I had a habit until I saw that...

I collect every example that I can find of certain Exhibit cards but if I said which I'd have to kill every reader, which could take years and cost millions of dollars to achieve...

I'm not very familiar with the 1948 Leaf set. Why are the colors so different from one to the next? The hats look so much different, as does most of the red color on both cards. The jersey's are different too. It appears as though the seams down the side, and on the shoulder are visible on the PSA 7, but not on the PSA 8. Are there variations within the set that just aren't noted on the PSA flip?

I've been beaten to the punch in regards to your question as to why the coloring is so different on each of these cards. There are variations and the set is notorious for this.

As for the flip being labelled 1948, I can only think that PSA does this because the first series of these cards was released in December 1948. I would like to see them label this card 1948-49 Leaf myself.

Pardon me for beinng difficult, but where did you get this...." first series of these cards was released in December 1948 ? "

I, and many old dinosaurs my age (nationwide), collected these LEAF BB cards as kids in the Spring of 1949. And, NONE of us
recall them ever been available at any time in 1948.
As late as December of 1948, we were still getting the 2nd series of LEAF FB cards.

Trust me, the 1st series of LEAF BB cards (49) were available in early Spring of '49. The 2nd (or scarce) series (of 49 cards)
were available in the Summer of '49....and, only in Boston, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio.

Ted, My information could be bad, but here is where I got it from. My wife's aunt's husband's father was a salesman for Topps from Day 1. The entire family gets together on major holidays, and of course, I gravitate to him because of his affiliation with Topps/baseball card and all the stories he has to tell. He knows about my love for Stan Musial, and during a conversation regarding my Musial cards, and my love for the 48-49 Leaf card, he told me about the first release going out in December 1948. Again, he's an old guy and might be giving me bad information, but that's where the information came from.

Thanks all for the info. I am not at all familiar with it like I said. I had heard bits and pieces about the 1948 or 1949 issues in the past. I did not know anything about the variations, and I appreciate all of your information.

The confusion in the hobby regarding these LEAF BB cards stems from the Copyright dates on the back of each card. In each of the two 49-card
series, 33 of the cards have a 1948 Copyright....while 16 cards have a 1949 Copyright.
However, these Copyright dates identify when LEAF Gum acquired the "Rights" to portray these ballplayers. And, not when the cards were issued.
Back in the 1980's, I had a complete uncut 49-card sheet of these LEAF's. So, I can attest to the fact that these were all printed together. Fur-
thermore, I was lucky to have saved all my BB & FB cards from my youth and I had a complete run of the 49 BB cards in the 1st series.

I wrote an 8-page article on this set in The Old Cardboard magazine (Issue 9, Spring 2006). In this story, I tell how these cards themselves provide
ample proof when they were produced. To illustrate this, certain player's biographical info reflect December 1948 trades. Also, Lou Boudreau's card
and Alvin Dark's card read that they were the MVP players of their respective Leagues. These awards were not known until sometime in December
of 1948. Therefore, it would have been virtually impossible to have printed and issued these cards in 1948.

I think that's as valuable information as the anecdotal evidence of when the cards were available to kids in the stores. Seems the 48-49 designation is accurate after all.
