Since white's are still a majority in this country, he probably gave racial characteristics as a way of identifying. I doubt there was some nefarious reason for the inclusion of the skin color.

Not saying there was. I just find it interesting that we do this. It reminds me of the famous exchange between McCarver and Gibson:

McCarver: there's a colored guy waiting to see you.
Gibson: Oh really, what color is he?
