Picked up the 1907 edition of Ellard's Baseball in Cincinnati. The 1907 edition was limited to 500 copies.

Picked up this today at an antiques fair.. c1930 Univ Chicago Wooden Football Player Toy by Sturdy Mfg. Co. Sturgis Michigan...never seen or heard of it before today...has the 1930 game roster on the back...must have been sold at the stadium as a souvenir...The stick on the back isn't original....you sort of twist the stick back and forth to make it walk...Antique sports toys are remarkably few...In relation to the amount of non sport toys produced....it'll go good in my sports toy collection

Amos Alonzo Stagg would have been coach then and I believe they were a power house in that era (Chicago from 1892 to 1932)....

I remember when I bought Stagg's personal bookends from his son Paul in 1988...he told me they donated most of his dad's memorabilia to the College of the Pacific in Stockton CA. where he last coached seriously...since Univ. of Chicago banished football which he seemed a little indignant about....said his mom saved everything and there whole garage had been full of his dad's memorabilia

Chicago could be considered one of the top teams in the Western Conference, which became the Big Ten Conference, in 21 of the 29 seasons from 1896 to 1924.

From 1925 on, for the most part Chicago could best be described as poor to fair in football.

Rob, you prompted me to look into the demise and reinstatement of football at U. Chicago....The internet is fantastic...all this information now at our googletips!!!...Turns out football at U.Chicago was banned by a football hating University President in 1939, then reinstated 30 years later in 1969 thru unusual circumstances of a mass meeting of students to support a deposed Marxist professor.....I know....sounds strange LOL....but ESPN writer Jon Greenberg wrote a good story on it you can read here below expserpts

"Old Stagg Field, which once sat 50,000 fans, is most famous for being the site of the first-ever nuclear chain reaction in 1942. Football was too barbaric for the school president Robert Hutchins, who called it "an infernal nuisance" when he banned it after the 1939 season. The atom bomb? No, that was fine.".....

"What Nelson didn't know at the time was that this sit-in was a rare occasion at the school, one that lumped thousands of students in one place. A couple of guys on Walter Hass' club football team took the opportunity to start a petition to bring back varsity football after a 30-year absence. They got 1,500 signatures and presented them to the faculty committee, the deans and the board of trustees, according to a Chicago Tribune story. Nelson said he thought the school was looking for some positive publicity in a time of upheaval.

Hass had been the Athletic director since 1956 and tried in vain to get football reinstated for years, waiting for the right time. This was it.

"It was a million-to-one shot," Hass told the Tribune, "but I guess sometimes, stubbornness pays off.".....

Many thanks to Net54 member Vincent Hecksel (Hexsheroes) who sold me a vintage signed Miles Main 3 x 5 which was on my B/S/T vintage no-hit pitcher want list that I recently posted. Miles Main's professional career amounted to essentially 3 years 1914-1916. He threw a no-hitter against the Buffalo Blues of the Federal League on August 16, 1915 while playing for the KC Packers. I really appreciate the assist Vincent!

Picked up an official national league baseball from the 1940 Finnish Relief All Star game. Also a cool looking slider ball used in the Red Sox system the 30's and 40's

Definitely my last buys for the month. I'm starting to think that at some point, Legendary will exhaust their supply of Detroit stuff...maybe...probably not.
