I have some cards I purchased long ago, that the dealer wrote the price on the back of the card in pencil. Not too smart, but it used to happen in the early 1970's and 80'. So writing on the card backs continued for some time, even by people who should have known better.

Bruce-Great card! In your scan you can see some of the "Paul" in St Paul in the lower right portion of the image

It's (the Werrrick card) very hard to read, even with a loupe. The "W" in Werrick and the "Paul" in St. Paul are the easiest to make out. The example in The Old Judge book exhibits a bit more contrast than my example and is a little bit easier to make out. The writing on the back certainly seems more recent than any other writing I've seen on N172s.

I used to own this SGC 20 Ed Delahanty that had "WFS" written on the back: http://robertedwardauctions.com/auction/2009/39.html I recall someone in the chat room having a N172 with the same initials on it so there must be a few of them out there.

Doug, this one obviously came from the same original collection as yor Delehanty, and at one point I had a few others that had the same initials on back...

Whoever "WFS" is must have had quite a few cards. Back when I had that Delahanty I started a thread asking if anyone had any idea who that was, but it didn't go anywhere. Maybe somebody knows more now?
