Tony -- no on both of these cards. Also, as Andrew pointed out and I noted the other day, some of the best cards were for sale only within the entire set. There were some incredible sets to be had -- for large dollars.

Yes, I found that many of the dealers purposely did not take out their expensive cards at the National so as not to sell them. I mean it's not like they were going to a once a year event which was centered around four and a half days of selling cards.

Yes I agree 100%. Most of the good stuff I found came from the shoebox in the closet type deal. I had to just about talk the shirt off a guy for one of my buddies card but he save a boat load of $$$$ just because I asked about a list of cards. Handed him a list, asked if he had anything on there. He spotted something from the look on his face and then said well I dont think I have anything for you from this list. I asked what he spotted on the list and to let me atleast see the cards. Out came a small box and within 30 min I secured a card from a very needed set for him. Called him up, he came back and got the card and knocked the biggest card from his list for about $650 less than the others in the show. Everybody was happy.

I am glad that I was Lucky enough to attend this year. I am glad that I was able to find some great stuff also for the guys not able to be here and got some amazing deals. They were there but you had to ask and be stubborn in negotiations to get cards at market $$$.

Are you sure the seller is OK with you talking about it? Publicly? On a message board?

I've heard that many sellers are using a new strategy that involves NOT TELLING paying customers what they have, or if it's for sale, and, if they do sell something requiring buyers to sign confidentiality agreements. Some sort of back-door marketing.

Of course, this information is very difficult to verify. Only ultra-high collectors, of penultimate items are supposed to be aware of this policy. Apparently, if the dealers reduce their sales low enough, this becomes some kind of a high end tax dodge.

This is a strategy only taught at the finest Ivy League institutions, and even then, only to those with tenure, who graduate Magna Cum Laude. This is not to be tried by sorted, red neck, community college alumni!

Very nice, David! Leave it to the non-sports guy to get a vintage haul like that.

This was my 8th straight National... didn't pick up a single baseball card, but I didn't go home empty-handed, luckily. Always great to see my collector buddies.

I was beyond bummed out and figured it was the deal that escaped me and nice guys finish last. Larry mentioned he might come back the next day but likely not...rrrgghhh. I only asked for the final opportunity to accept or reject the price, when he determined what it would take. Amazingly, he showed up early at 8:00 today and arrived at my table (using the loaned dealer pass) and was willing to sell them for price that made sense to both of us. He purchased the entire collection for $1,000 in a local estate sale. Larry is a nice, gentle, simple but interesting older gentleman that traces his roots back to the early to mid 1700s in Virginia. His family reunions on their original homestead (300+ acres in the Virginia hills) attracts 2,000 family members each year. He told me the oil mining royalties pays all the taxes and some other interesting stories. I just wanted to post some images and share my excitement. To top it off, today is my Birthday and could not have asked for a better gift on the last day of the National. I made other pickups for my collection and inventory but they are not baseball related. Thanks for sharing in my excitement!

I am the collector who now owns the M131 Baltimore Newsboys. There were 9 Newsboys and 5 Briggs cards that I bought from Larry. All are now graded by SGC. I didn't end-up winning the lot you won because I graded and valued the lot much lower than you did here according to Larry who told me what you paid. The T207's were G to VG but the T206 were mostly Poor to Good. That said, I was happy Larry was happy because he was a very nice older gentleman.

Well done DJR. I wish I had a few of those T207s!

I was disappointed that I couldn't find a T206 Neal Ball New York in PSA 4, but was able to get the others I wanted.

Most of my bankroll went towards picking up over half of the cards needed to complete my '58 Topps set. I added 82 cards and am down to about 70 to complete it including the variations.

After that I dropped a grand on Ripken autographs for my son and I. Cal never disappoints, and I got autographs with inscirptions on the four printing plates used to produce the cover of the of Feb/March 2007 Beckett Baseball Card Plus cover honoring his election to The Hall of Fame.

My sole prewar purchase was from The Sporting News Collection, because the Red Rolfe image below just seemed too great to pass up. That collection was amazing and thumbing through the photos was a great way to spend some time at The National even if you didn't buy any.
