He may have had a good debut, but c'mon folks he's pitching
against a sub-par Pittsburgh Pirates team. Let's not jump to conclusions. Let's wait and see how he performs a real Major league team. ErikV |

I hope he is as good as advertised. They compare him to to David Clyde. I remember when Fernando Valuenza pitched at Shea on a Friday night in his rookie year and they sold out despite the Mets being terrible. I also remember Dwight Gooden in 1984-1986 and the attendance spike when he pitched. I hope he is the real deal. CN

DVR'd the game and just watched it. It may have been Pitt, but Wow.

I went to the game and as Mark said, the place was rocking. He seemed to get stronger as the game went on. He probably relaxed and hit a better rhythm, getting behind on fewer hitters. I noticed one fastball hit 100mph, with it consistently at 97 or 98. Most impressive to me is the way he totally locked up several batters with his curve. That said, nothing is the least conclusive with a young pitcher until he's been around the circuit once and is pitching to teams after they've faced him once.

I can not believe all the hype. Yes he had a great first game against a bottom feeding Pirates team. Yes he threw exceptionally well, but let's not put him in the Hall of Fame just yet. I remember another shining star who in his major league debut wowed everyone and he went on to start in the All-Star game his rookie year and win 19 games that season. Mark Fidyrich.
Let's wait a while and see what happens. This IS good for baseball in general, though.

Bob, I agree that Strasburg isn't an HOF lock yet but the point is that the incredible expectations were not just met but were exceeded last night. Yes, Fidrych had a great rookie year (and a great first start) on the way to a second place Cy Young finish; however, there were no expectations at all for him when he made that start. Strasburg's first start may have come with it the most lofty expectations EVER for a first Major League start.
Edited to add: Nevertheless, the lineup he faced last night was really a great Triple A team. Other than McCutcheon, the rest of the team is horrible.
