Has anyone ever framed a card for display?

No way I was gonna slab this beauty but I wanted to present it as nicely as possible as well as ensure its preservation. Had it framed acid free, UV glass etc. Snap doesn't do it justice.

I recently had a few Cobb cards framed with a signed newspaper picture I have. I had it framed archivally (sp?) with all the proper UV glass so it could be displayed without worry of fading, etc.

Jeff, I agree with David on this one. It's not a card per se, and for safety purposes he really couldn't leave it unslabbed/unprotected. It's so much nicer than an Exhibit or PC so it does look better framed on a wall than slabbed in a box.

Could he have slabbed it and framed it, or would that be overkill?

I think it would be overkill because who wants to see a slab inside a frame on a card like this? It's not like this is a Registry card which would be enhanced value-wise if it was slabbed. And when David sells it to me I'm certain that the price he gets will be the same regardless of if it's slabbed.

I suppose I draw the slab/no slab line, however nebulous it is, at baseball cards that were issued as premiums or in conjunction with products such as N173s or T3s, and not to include "artistic" products such as studio cabinets. I felt that the aesthetics of Falk's photo would be compromised by a slab and a grade. In other words, it's just too damn nice.
I'm probably a little closer to meeting the Great Authenticator in the Sky than some of you youngsters so I've had to get my act together as to how to dispose of East Honolulu's Finest Known Vintage Collection. Prizner gets the McGraw Roto, Lichtman gets first dibs on the LC CJ Matty, and Mad Max gets the Saskatchewan FB pennant, but as far as the Falk Matty, sorry, Jeff, I gave it to Chicago as a going away present.

Very cool item!! It looks like he kept his roll of trolley tokens in his front pocket.
I have never done it with a card, but am a big fan on floating, as long as the background wall is not white (or an off shade of white).

Robesm, that Creighton would look great in a quality custom frame with museum grade class.

Scooter729, what type of frame was used to put display those SGC graded cards? A few framing shops I've been to haven't had many ideas as to how to frame something thick like a graded card. And they said that once they put the paper back on the frame, you can't open the frame up and get the card out.

I've thought about making my own frames that would display graded cards and allow you to remove them.

I have a friend who owns a frame shop, who did this for me. I was limited as to the frames from which I could select, in that it had to be thick enough to accept the SGC cases.

It is true that I wouldn't be able to pop open the frame myself and take a card out and put a new one in its place (as would be the case with any custom frame), but I guess I'm fortunate that the one time I wanted to replace one of the cards, I just brought the frame back to his shop and he did it quickly for me.

When framed outside of the slab, I think pieces look more like pieces of art. The age of the item somehow shows through a little more too I think......

I've framed a number of pieces, and here's one that combines two of the effects already showcased by other members on this thread. Using both a clear float so that the back can be seen, as well as using a cut down mat as backing to give a bolder contrast to the piece. Kinda modern, tradtional, all thrown together.

Phil: I am not sure of the specifics. The person who does picture framing for me is a strong advocate of the conservation approach and everything she uses is acid-free etc and meant to be non-deleterious to the item being framed. She uses rice paper hinges which, if I understand correctly, will securely mount the artwork, can be removed without impairing the piece, and will not be conducive to foxing, mold etc. It's especially critical to frame things in the tropics with an eye to conservation; Hawaii is rough on cardboard.
