Wow that sucks you just missed it, I know absolutly nothing about bats but think your 50/50 guess is right on. I'm not sure how many bats would've been made with his name so maybe that up's it to 80% ? Also the fact that others bid higher means they thought it was real, and the question someone asked with the numbers on the end of the bat may mean something to authenticate it ? Hopefully if real you will get another shot at it sometime, or better yet get one of his gloves !!

It is a pro model bat from what looks to be 1943-49. Better pictures of the label would help determine exactly when its from.
