The title may be incorrect, but it's something to the effect of:
"There Use to be a Ball Park Here." From vintage pre war cards. To vintage slabs. To vintage crossovers. To vintage UD's. ... ![]() "There Use to be a Ball Park Here." |

Like you said, it is a wonderful song.
Sad, but great memories ..... I do remember my dad taking me to my first game ... Polo Grounds in 1944. He pointed out an old friend of his on the field ... Adolfo Luque. Played hooky from school, and sat in the right field bleacher of Yankee's Stadium with some school friends for the first game of the 1947 WS ... Ralph Branca vs Spec Shea ... Jackie Robinson's first WS game. Watched, and strained to listen to the Babe say his last goodby to the fans, on his last visit to the Stadium that he helped build. On a sunny day, sitting with my dad at Shea Stadium, and doing the wave, the wave was something new with the fans, and we were having fun with it. Sadly, my dad is gone, and so is the Polo Grounds, Old Yankee Stadium and Shea. There Use to be a Ball Park Here. Last edited by Potomac Yank; 04-17-2010 at 10:25 PM. |

That's one of my favorite shots of the two stadiums.

I will sum up UD in two examples...
1) "You charge .75 a pack? Are cards will be nicer and people will now pay $2 a pack!" What follows: Stadium Club, Fleer Ultra, Score Pinnacle and then other tiers, like SP, Fleer Flair... 2) "Hey Mickey, why are you only charging $35 per signature? How would you like to charge a lot more!" What follows: Million dollar contracts with athletes and pricing out the Sunday show collector. You MUST read that book (can't remember) from the 1990's all about Richard McWilliams, his MASSIVE ego and the fact that whatever was valued for "rarity reasons", was produced in massive quantities to flood the market and the value would sink. I.E Dale Murphy Reverse and Upper Deck Canadian Hockey Boxes. I don't feel bad as a former collector who used to enjoy even the new stuff, but gave up on it about 15 years ago. DanC
