... was Bobby Doerr. Bob Feller a close 2nd.
Got a ball with Teddy ballgame, Yaz and Doerr (all at the same show) they were all in sep. rooms, Doerr was alone on the lower level. When we went to get his sig. there was no line, no handler, just him sitting at table twiddling his thumbs. got to sit and chat with him for over 20 minutes! We even went and got him a soda and a piece of Pizza. I felt bad that he was being neglected, esp. considering how grumpy Yaz was that day. Cheers to Bobby! Leo. |

I've always thought his '41 Play Ball card was a work of art.
Thanks for showing your copy, Blair. |

I know I'm a bit late with this post. Bobby Doerr is one of the finest gentlemen of the game. When asked, most of his contemporaries would name Bobby Doerr as one of the nicest ballplayers. He befriended a somewhat boisterous and unconventional rookie in 1939 named Williams when most of the team didn't know quite what to make of "the kid"........they became life-long friends. It's too bad he had to retire at such a young age (34) in 1951 due to back problems. He most certainly would have added significantly to his statistical numbers had he played 3-4 more years, and he was always great with the leather.
