Joe, I could use another Sparks dinner right about now. Or Philippe. Name the night.

I was amazed to see the amount of snow in SI this morning; we literally did not get a drop here. Next week for sure.

After the FBI investigation and any resulting prosecutions shake out, I wonder whether there will be an opportunity for a well-respected entrepreneur with a long-standing connection to the hobby (Barry?) to establish a voluntary association of auction houses and grading companies to create and enforce a code of ethics to address the issues raised in this thread. Of course, this would only work if the association possessed all necessary authorities to be effective. I should think that the auction houses and grading companies might well be receptive as this form of self-policing sure beats policing by the Justice Department.
By the way, I could sure use a part-time job. Mark |

Mark- we tried this a few years ago and it died on the vine. Jim Crandall was spearheading it, and in retrospect he may not have had the right temperament for it.

Rob- I really don't think a discussion of grading service improprieties is off topic at all. Shill bidding was not the only fun activity at Mastro Auctions. I am certain that when the company had a big submission of raw cards consigned by an important client they sent a lobbyist with the cards to discuss grades (hey, if we're only getting a 6 on this one then I want an 8 on that one). Remember, they were a full service auction company.

Can someone please post the difference in price between PSA7 and PSA8 common cards from the following series:
T206 1933 Goudey 1952T This might put a little more perspective to the topic of graders being sellers.

It's probably an uphill effort, but I think the timing might be better now, or at least after the conclusion of the pending investigations. The potential for success, I think, turns in part on how and by whom the proposal is presented to the auction houses and grading companies. Perhaps the simplest, first step would be informal contacts with the principals of the major companies to determine the extent of any interest. Mark |
