I'm 99% sure that no other pitcher has done this. Guys with very long careers like Steve Carlton, Jack Quinn,
Warren Spahn, CYoung (etc.) don't make it. If I have done my homework sufficiently, Roger Clemens comes the closest. Although he pitched in 2 games in the 1986 WS, he did not have a Win. I'd like to see Pettitte achieve this. I think he has 3 more seasons in his southpaw arm. He is a big guy like Clemons and Schilling and that is in his favor. However, will he be with a Championship team in 2012 ? TED Z Last edited by tedzan; 01-19-2010 at 11:00 AM. Reason: In order to be spared Barry S's spelling wrath. |

I didn't realize Pettitte was only 37. I also didn't realize I misspelled his name earlier. I thought for sure he was older. He's still a pretty effective pitcher, I think he is capable of being around for a few more years.

Ted, Tom,
There's no doubt in my mind that Pettitte can be effective for a few more years. I don't know if he wants to do it. He talks about retirement every year and has been since he was 32 or 33. I know he's an unusual guy compared to most in that he seems to truly value family time. He may have difficulty finding a $14,000,000 a year job in the private sector. It would be hard to walk away from that kind of money. The first year the market decides he's "only" worth $6,000,000 might be the year he goes. |

Edited to add - Just checked. Clemens was 3-0 in his WS career. Wins in 1999, 200, and 2001, at the ages of 37, 38, and 39. Last edited by Jim VB; 01-19-2010 at 11:26 AM. |

Clemens started in 1986, including Game 6 at Shea, but I guess he didn't win any.

He started 2 games in 1986 and got no decisions in either. He had a 6-2 lead in game 2, but only went 4.1 innings. In game 6 he pitched great, but came out after 7 innings. Had a 3-2 lead. We all know what happened after that.
