Ted made a good point. Sometimes a very long post is quoted in its entirety, when only a sentence or two is relevant to what the next poster wants to say. Maybe shortening some of them would make for a good compromise. If I take the time to read somebody's long post, why should I be asked to read it again?

I think Barry's confusion came from not calling it the sarcasm detector

Default you don't need to read it if you don't want to

Barry- You don't need to read the highlighted quotes if you don't want to. I only read them part of the time. It is better to take out the part that is actually pertinent to the response and only quote it....but that takes some time and sometimes I am lazy.

Jeff- what's to lose? Sometimes people post very long threads, often consisting of several paragraphs. I may read it and then scroll down and see someone has grabbed the entire long thread and used it as a quote. Am I expected to read it again? I will just ignore it. But if only a few relevant sentences were grabbed from that long post, I am more likely to read them. That's all.

Leon- to use your example, if you are too lazy to extract a few relevant sentences from a very long post, then why quote at all? Why not just say what you want to without repeating someone else's thread?

Well, to state the obvious, it's easier for other board members to know who you (or me) are responding to if the post we are responding to is quoted. Otherwise, many times, folks might not know who we are answering.

See, now I have to go back up and figure out which Cobb is superawesome since you didn't quote the photo.

It's actually a useful tool when used judiciously, but not when it is in nearly every post. Remember what happened to Elaine when she overused the exclamation point? Same thing!!!

Default dinosaur grave

I don't understand this stuff so i realize that i must be under the dinosaur grave
referred to earlier.
But i do like Jeff's Cobb very much.
My proxy vote goes to Barry Sloate who is astute enough to be above me in the dinosaur grave.

best,
barry

I gotta be honest here. For this option to really bother some one enough where it needs to be discussed in great length is kinda silly, don't ya' think?
Here I am gettin' home after a long 10 hour work day. I sit down to relax, jump on N54 to unwind a bit only to find out the quote option bothers someone.

GEESH!!!

ps- Jeff, Nice Cobby.... No quote option used.

Not to belabor the point, but I don't think I'm being "dinosaur-ish" by using the quotes feature judiciously. I think it is making better use of some of the features that are available on this site.

I think if we take a second or two to narrow the quotes down, before quoting, it will help. I do it sometimes but not all of the times. I would venture to guess the majority of the features on this board are not used. The calendar is rarely used as is the chat room (it was used more on the old board, go figure) and the "pictures and albums" option. I really like the pictures and album option as it's so easy to upload scans. It would be nice to see some more collections in there. I browse there every so often and have 75 of my favorites in there right now.

To Tony's point about this being trivial. It is but hey....such is collecting sometimes. I wish this was my biggest issue (quoting on the board)...but unfortunately it doesn't quite make my top 1000. regards

Tony- I know the idea of fighting over the use of the quote function seems trivial, but this is about more than that. It's really about class warfare...the dinosaurs against the younger and more computer literate crowd. Class struggles are always worth debating. (okay, I used my sarcasm button this time).
