I am very happy to say that we've had a lot of really great pickups over the past decade, but here is a recent batch of items that we acquired all on the same day....

found this amazing piece at an antique show in 2002 or 2003 while digging thru a box of advertising items.....price was $20.00.
as I approached the dealer / vendor with the item, I asked if they happened to have one in better condition (I do have my smart-ass tendencies) before I handed them the twenty dollar bill. |

My favorite acquisition has to be the original illustrations by Charles Copeland for Frank Hart's 1938 novel, The Speed Boy. The book itself is interesting as it deals with baseball in the deadball era, and I'm not sure how popular that was in 1938, given Babe Ruth's rise to fame.
Here are some of the illustrations, as well as the book itself ![]() ![]() ![]() Max |

My favorite pickup of the decade was an 1896 baseball bat handmade and inscribed in Maine State Prison by a prisoner serving a life sentence. It had the original prison decal stating it was made in the prison and came with the original, but very tattered, leather carrying case. The bat itself was Near Mint plus, apparently unused. The bat was a working adult size but with a unique design, including rings cut into the barrel mimicking a Spaulding painted ring bat. You can see a couple of the rings in the left of the picture. After I bought it from a reliable source, I sent pictures of it, including a closeup of the decal, to the prison museum (it's now a state historical site, the original prison was largely destroyed by fire in the early 1900s). The curator said it was genuine and that the prison had a prisoner woodworking shop and baseball league.

I hope that the vendor felt sorry for you and at least gave you a discount on the Shoelsess Joe in such poor condition..............

This is perhaps my favorite post-war photo.
I also feel that in my opinion, this tremendous photograph of Koufax is his definitive image... Vintage original TYPE I photo of Koufax as he dominated the Yankees in game 1 of the 1963 series, and a 1964 signed companion piece card. 003.jpg1964koufaxsignedcardPSADNA.jpg 004.jpg 006.jpg |

Wow Jimmy! That truly is an iconic Koufax image.... almost looks like a contortionist in his delivery. What an epic combo!
Here's a favorite photo in my collection. I thought it was cool to see Conlon's comments on the reverse, written in his hand. Now, Jimmy's post has inspired me to find Matty's 1940 Playball Card, to make it complete (the card pictured below is not mine...) |
