Thanks fellas!

Barry, thank you for those words about light. That's actually the main thing I try to instill into each painting. I feel like it goes beyond making something look photographic, but giving the viewer the impression that he/she is there, breathing the same air as these players. In the end, if people can see these images and be brought back to days of youth with their fathers and grandfathers and actually smell the popcorn, cigar smoke, and hear the buzz of the crowd, then I'm incredibly happy.

In the spirit of the ol' 'washed up' man starting for the Phillies in the game tomorrow, here's an in-progress shot of another supposedly 'washed up' veteran who happened to beat the Yanks in Games 2 and 6 in the '26 Blue Ribbon classic, not to mention close out the final innings of Game 7 with stellar relief work, most notably against Tony Lazzeri. Ol' Pete!!

Another Conlon shot, dating from '28, I think. This one's 11"x14", and the image has some interesting light going for it. It's far from done, but I feel like it's starting to take on some personality. Gotta love those wrinkles.

Oh, and excuse the photography, and the crappy angle - it seems that shooting it this way is the only chance I have at avoiding any glare.

Alright, this is it for tonight. I promise.

The first Jewish superstar of the Major Leagues, Hammerin' Hank Greenberg:

Again, this one's FAR from done. And, like the Grover Cleveland image, this is from a Conlon photo and is 11"x14".

I know, I know, the photograph sucks. The glare is wreaking havoc on the left side of his face, as that side cheek isn't so rosy. Argh. One day, I'll master the technique of taking proper in-progress photographs. Or at least, I hope.

Hope you enjoy 'em!

Here's what's been on the easel this weekend. A biggie at 38"x60", this is a commission that I've finally been getting around to finishing. Or at least, getting close to finishing. I hope.

My father has threatened to disown me on numerous occasions for this one. Like most Yankee fans his age, I don't think he's ever gotten over this moment...and I don't think he ever will...and I can't blame him:

It's got a ways to go, but hopefully I can get it done and out of my sights before he sees it again. There's just so much darn information in there, especially with the wall, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, the scoreboard, and that damn crowd in left. It's driving me bananas!

As usual, please excuse the cruddy photography. Hope everyone had a great weekend!

I love seeing the ball in flight on that one...

Does anyone know what the ball had to clear at Forbes' Left Field, to be considered a home run (did it have to clear that giant scoreboard?) Did Maz really hit his homer over that scoreboard (to the right of the clock) as it appears? I've read numerous times that his homer barely made it out, but have never seen clear footage of the ball's flight, or where it ended up.

Also... What's with the scaffolding at the base of the light tower in left? The red brick fence is clearly behind that scaffolding. Seems like quite the obstacle to overcome, if that was truly in the field of play!

You're right Graig... there's a lot going on in that busy painting (which is magnificent, btw!)

Graig

Absolutely amazing. I keep waiting for Matty to blink.

To me though, the Cobb looks perfect the way it is right now. If was going to be the future owner of that painting, I wouldn't want you to do another thing to it.

I always enjoy seeing your paintings.

Thanks for sharing,

Jantz

I am sitting here with my wife who could give a rats rear end about sports and I showed her these paintings. She was as taken with them as I have been all this time. She is amazed at the life-like nature of your paintings and how exceptional they are. I have to say....somewhere along the line, I hope to God you will start selling lithos or at the very minimum, posters that can be purchased. You have a talent that needs to be shown to a wider audience and I know I cant afford an original but I would love to own a signed litho or poster!!

Keep up the great work.

I saw that Matty painting at the National and was absolutely blown away by it. One of the most stunning pieces of art I've ever seen. I swear I stood there for at least 15 minutes just staring at it. By the end of the 15 minutes I had decided to buy it, but it was already sold.

I'd love to see you bring some Negro Leaguers to life on the canvas. And so would my walls!

Keep up the mind-blowingly brilliant work!

Thanks a lot, guys.

Matty6, I've always loved that image too. I wouldn't mind breaking into the racing scene with my work, though in the end, I think it might take a client to commission something to get me going on it. I just feel like my mind is always in the baseball mode, and now, sometimes even football and basketball - it seems to take forever for me to branch out. I'll even be doing my first hockey piece this year too, which will be very exciting!

Hey all,

Hope everyone's been doing well so far this new year.

I thought I'd post some stuff I just got back from the photographers in the past few weeks. I think it might mark my first sharing of work since December, so I figured I was off of my pace!

Before I show it, I just wanted to send a HUGE 'thank you' for all of you guys on the board for giving me so much support over the past few years, whether it's been through sales, scans (especially Chris C. for the enclosed Mantle), advice or encouragement. It's really meant the world to me - probably in ways I could never really articulate.

Anywho, I hope you enjoy!

Babe Ruth, 1922, 16" x 20"

Hank Greenberg, 1937, 16" x 20"

Joe DiMaggio, Fiorello La Guardia & Lou Gehrig, October 5, 1938, 28" x 36"

Mickey Mantle, August 7, 1955, 30" x 64"

Certainly, any comments or crits are ALWAYS welcomed. And, I do have plenty of stuff that's in-progress too, which I'd be glad to post if y'all are interested.

Thanks again,

Graig

Once again your work is incredible but I can only imagine that Mantle and the DiMaggio/Gehrig have got to be incredible to see in person!!!

Keep up the great work as you are certainly a gifted artist!!

Now get your agent going on the coffee table book/lithos/card sets/whatever so those that cannot afford an original can have some of your work as well.

Hey guys,

So, I'm almost done with this guy for Scott Garner, and I thought I'd share it in its current state.

The shot is from my iPhone, so it might seem a bit grainy, but in terms of color and value, I think it's pretty darn true. I still have a bit to work on, including the dugout floor, and some tightening up on Johnny, but it's nearly there.

This image has been so much fun to work with, mostly because of all of the reflected light bouncing around the walls and Vandy's legs. That (including that foot bathed in light) was what really excited me about the original photo. I guess I just really had a pretty strong idea of what the finished painting would look like, so from then it was just tunnel vision. I don't know if Scott could have picked a better image of the man.

And for those of you keeping score, it's from his 1938 season, the same in which he threw his two consecutive no-hitters.

Anywho, hope y'all dig it!!

Graig,
That is fantastic!
The light and shadow control is amazing. I liken it to the Jackie coming out of the shadows.

As far as the image itself, The only thing that could be better would be if he was smiling.
I love the pics of them smiling, showing the joy and love of the game.

As usual another masterpiece in Kreindlercolor.

Mark

This picture is really cool of Ruth. But it is pretty dark and hard to see detail. Ruth crossing home after his 3rd World Series homerun. And the crowd celebrating his "hat trick". Pretty neat to see the hats being thrown. Thought it may make a nice painting...

Hey everyone,

Hope you're all having a great summer, and had a very safe and fun Fourth yesterday.

I've been giving a handful of paintings to my photographers over the past week (and will continue to do so tomorrow), and here are the results of the first two:

Eiji Sawamura, 1936, 20" x 32"

Charles 'Hoss' Radbourn, 1887, 12" x 16"

The Eiji took forever to come together, as it's just ridiculously hard to get ANY good reference of this guy. MANY thanks to Robert Klevens for hooking a brutha up. And the second image, which was a fun departure, was provided by Rob Lifson and the good people at REA, so a big 'thank you' to them as well!

Also, there's some exciting stuff going on in the next few weeks, as the USPS is going to be releasing a book entitled 'Play Ball! Great Moments in Major League Baseball History,' which will be featuring 16 baseball-themed stamps that have been released over the years (some of which are from Kadir Nelson, a WONDERFUL artist). Anywho, the book will be 40 pages from what I understand, and I've been honored to have 12 of my paintings featured throughout the thing (though not on the stamps). If ya'd like to get more info, check it out here:

https://store.usps.com/store/promo/c...mo_MLBAllStars

It's a pretty big deal, as I guess the book will be available in post offices throughout the country. And though I don't get any royalties for the book or anything like that, just being able to say that one of my clients has been the United States Postal Service is quite a resume boost. Hopefully it can lead to some good things.

At the same time, I want to thank ALL of you guys on the boards for showing me so much love and support over the past few years, whether it's been through purchases, comments, critiques, or just general friendship - it means more to me than I can possibly express.

Anywho, I'd love to hear your thoughts on any of these two, especially the Radbourn painting, being that it's another one of those interesting studio portraits that had always been a scary endeavor.

Thanks,

Graig

Thank you so much for all of your kind words, everybody!! They're very much appreciated.

That Johnson painting seems to be a pretty big hit with a lot of people - I guess it's because it's a little bit different from the kind of stuff I normally do. Or maybe it isn't. I don't know. But it was definitely a challenge combining the backdrop with the carpet and then the jersey. They all had to look and feel different, which I'm hoping they do.

But seriously, thank you so much for sticking with me on this thing. And thanks for the kudos about parenthood. I don't know how you guys do it - most days I feel like I'm going to lose my mind. And the amount of money everything costs now...oh man, it was tough with one kid, but two? And we haven't even gotten close to the college years yet. Thank god we've started 529s. Hopefully I'll make it without my head exploding.
