Hi Barry
Here are a a few... I have contributed many of the current scans in the Krause SCD Baseball guide of some rare pre-war cards as well as shared information for use in it. Provided information for the Beckett Almanac and am listed with a credit there. Participated in many forming endeavors of OldCardboard magazine. Wrote an article or two also. Wrote an article for the 19thCenturyOnly website when it still had feature stories on it. Featured in Beckett Vintage magazine, with an in depth interview, due to various hobby activities. Interviewed several times for perspectives on the hobby and subsequently published in different venues. Contributed to Jon Canfield's wonderful book on cigarette packs. |

I've written a few:
"Those Who Served: Baseball and the Military Through WW1." Old Cardboard Issue #2, Winter 2005, Pg. 29. "The Third Major League." SGC Collector Magazine, Vol. 1, Issue 1, Summer 2005, Pg. 9. "1973 Topps Photography: A Closer Look." SGC Collector Magazine, Vol. 1, Issue 2, Fall 2005, Pg. 16. "Ballplayers on the Tube: The Story of the 1955 Bowman Baseball Set." Sports Market Report (SMR), May 2007, pg. 140. (edited to add: only two of these were within the scope of Net54's main focus, and looking at them, neither was really about cards at all. One focused on players who served in the military and the other talked about the Federal League.) Speaking with Lyman Hardeman after the Net54 Dinner last week, he told me that he still gets requests for that issue (and I've seen questions come through about it on SABR's military forum from time to time). We've discussed doing other articles but they've never come to fruition -- which was mostly my own fault, not trying to cast a bad shadow on Lyman at all. The '73 Topps article was a lot of fun; I basically pulled out my binder, flipped through the cards and the piece virtually wrote itself. Last edited by ChrisStufflestreet; 08-07-2009 at 07:58 PM. I know it's a bit of a pain but ole Barry Sloate cranked them out! Quite an impressive collection of pieces, Jeff O.--- and Chris S. you offer some innovative pieces with one in the works! any others out there? best, barry |

Here are mine (in chronological order, by publication date):
Card Prices Among the Economic Chaos, www.CardInformant.com, Nov. 14, 2008, available at http://cardinformant.com/news/index....id=60&Itemid=2 -- This was my first ever attempt at writing and originally appeared in our first e-Newsletter (Nov. 2008). The content is mildly interesting, but it is nowhere near as good as our other articles. The 1958 NFL Championship Game 50 Years Later: Why the 1952 Bowman Large Football Set is Superior to the 1952 Topps Baseball Set, SGC Collector Magazine, Spring 2009, also available on our blog by clicking here -- This was my first article that appeared in print (it originally appeared in our January 2009 e-Newsletter). ![]() Cigarettes, Hollywood Starlets, and Nazis: The Historical Tale of the Garbaty Film Stars Sets , Classic Images (vintage movie magazine), June 2009, also available at on our blog by clicking here -- This is my favorite article (and probably always will be) because of the sets' (and Garbaty Company's) place in the history of pre-war Nazi Germany (the three sets were released in 1934, 1936, and 1937). The cards are also some of the most exquisite ever printed. If you have a free 15 minutes to kill, I recommend this one above all of my others (you'll need 20+, if you want read the endnotes. This article originally appeared in our March 2009 e-Newsletter. Cigarettes, Hollywood Starlets, and Nazis: The Historical Tale of the Garbaty Film Stars Sets , Card Collecting News, scheduled to appear in two parts in the October and November 2009 issues -- This is the same article as the one above (we're getting a lot of mileage out of it). Charlie, Bob and Me & The 1953-1955 Johnston Cookies Milwaukee Braves Sets, Old Cardboard, scheduled to be published in March 2010; also available on our blog by clicking here -- This one was really fun to write and research (it originally appeared in our June 2009 e-Newsletter). Introducing the Finest Known 1958 NFL Championship Game ticket Stub, Gridiron Greats, scheduled for Fall/Winter 2006 -- This is a hobby find article which I am currently revising; thus, a final is not available, yet. -------------------- Article I am still shopping around for publication (with no luck, yet): Chuck Taylors, Musty Gyms, the Hardwood, and the Emergence of a Legend: The 1957-58 Topps Basketball Set, available on our blog by clicking here (this article originally appeared in our April 2009 e-Newsletter). ------------------- Writings in progress: E79 Philadelphia Caramel 27 Scrappers boxing set (due to be appear in our August 2009 e-Newsletter, set for release on August 25th). Co-authoring a personal account of witnessing all three 1977 World Series games at Yankee Stadium (due to appear in our September 2009 e-Newsletter, set for release in late September). -------------------- By the way, if anyone would like to be on our monthly e-Newsletter list, please send us an email at MDsportscards@gmail.com (Leon, lemme know if I need to delete this line ![]()

In January of this year, I submitted my first article to Sports Collectors Digest. I entitled it, "A Tale of Three Mantles." It comprised three regional/food issue cards of Mickey Mantle---1962 JELL-O unfolded box, 1960 Post Cereal, and 1954 Stahl-Meyer Franks. I was pleased SCD seemed to like it, but they kept putting it off. Naturally, I was getting nervous.
Finally, their managing editor, Tom Bartsch, a swell guy and very young, revealed to me that they liked it so much that they were saving it for this year's National in Cleveland, to give it more attention, as they were giving out that issue for free there. In actuality, only the first segment ran in that August 14, 2009 SCD (Issue #1503). The editors also changed the title to "A Tale of Three Treasures." I wasn't sure if I was doing anything really worthwhile, or if my approach was stupid. After all, Mickey Mantle articles abound. My nephew-in-law, a college English prof, wanted me to tear out all my creative stuff, I could've chucked the whole thing. I called our Leon, read and sung a few portions to him, and bless his heart, he seemed to enjoy it. Whilst I am well aware that this is not a pre-war article, and perhaps have wasted your space, at least the newest card I discussed is 47 years old. Take care guys, and you few ladies, too. --Brian Powell Last edited by brian1961; 08-08-2009 at 12:05 PM. Reason: I forgot some pertinent info; I also suffer occasionally from verbosity. |

The humorous part of the job is the editor sent me a guide on how to write in English— as in English English, not American English. This included the proper way to name my country, a name not in normal or common use by Americans or in the United States, and one I had never used before. Barry - I dug up three articles I did for The Old Judge in the late 1980's and early 90's. One of them discussed how some of the auctions at the time were not fair to the average collector, and that some even might be fraudulent. I was twenty years ahead of the times! Another I think discussed the state of the hobby, and the third dealt with some 19th century memorabilia. Just thought I would add them to your growing total.

Barry- when you feel this list is complete are you going to collate all the information and create a usable bibliography? It would be nice for people to be able to find out if anything has ever been written on a card or piece of memorabilia they are researching.
Then the next step is for them to have easy access to that article. That part may be tougher. |
