I want to know why the wife gets to keep $2.5 million of "other people's money"? Why weren't all assets seized? I am sure one of the many families destroyed by this guy would appriciate the money.

The wife keeps $2.5 because it would cost about twice that to zero her out in litigation. Pragmatism trumps justice, sometimes.

The way she is used to spending money she will be broke in 8-15 months and then she can do a reality show and try to get more.

That was my first thought as well until I saw her being interviewed while riding the subway.

But keep in mind that she'll be getting sued left and right...that 2.5 is hardly safe and sound with her.

Can someone tell me the difference between life in prison and 150 years? I suppose if Madoff lived to be 225 years old (or there abouts) he could be out on the street again. Ok, maybe they figure that they combine all of the time of all of the offenses but it just sounds stupid - "sentenced to 150 years in prison". I say, let the carcass rot in the cell for 150 years, then remove it.

He probably screwed more people than John Holmes.

150 years is a hedge against any sudden and drastic advancement in cryonics.

I'm not a lawyer, but I think it has something to do with the type of crime you're being sentenced for. Maybe the courts can't impose a life sentence for financial crimes as opposed to imposing a life sentence for murder, so they have to sentence years. Just a guess.

150 yr sentence is actually 85% of 150 years; so he has to serve 128 years. A federal life sentence is full life -- he comes out of prison in a bag.
